English resigns as coach of Hurricanes

- BY KELLEY SMIDDIE STAFF WRITER

East Hamilton varsity boys’ basketball coach Rodney English resigned his coaching position Friday, school principal Gail Chuy confirmed.

English had been suspended from coaching the team since Monday. The suspension stemmed from an altercation with a player and a parent after the previous Friday’s home game against Tyner.

The Hurricanes were 18-3 after defeating Tyner 62-49 that night but have gone 1-2 since, including Friday’s 53-45 home loss to Walker Valley. That leaves East Hamilton at 7-2 in the District 5-AAA standings, now two games in the loss column behind district-leading Cleveland (16-2, 8-0).

Chuy declined to elaborate about any details of English’s resignation, and she chose not to answer any questions regarding the situation moving forward. Presumably assistant coach Zach Roddenberry, who has been in charge of the program since the suspension, will remain interim coach the rest of the season.

English was in his fifth year coaching the Hurricanes and had compiled a 76-41 record. Last season he guided East Hamilton, which is currently in its ninth season as a program, to a 25-11 record and its first state-tournament berth.

The Times Free Press made an effort to contact English, but he did not respond.
