Moseley coach for Cougars golf

Miles Moseley is the new coach of the first-year Cleveland State men’s and women’s golf program, which is scheduled to hit the links again March 16-18 in the Tusculum Invitational at Greeneville, Tenn. Hired last month, Moseley is a Cleveland native and former Cleveland State golfer whose wife, Dr. Elizabeth Moseley, is a psychology professor at the school. Miles became a golf professional who worked, among other places according to a Cleveland State release Monday, at the Ocean Forest club at Sea Island, Ga. Ocean Forest hosted the Walker Cup while he was there, and he also worked at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center. He played on some mini tours and has caddied on the PGA’s Web.com Tour.

CROSS COUNTRY

› The Covenant College and Sewanee cross country teams received NCAA Division III all-academic awards for 2017 from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and both schools had runners receive individual all-academic awards. Team recognition requires at least a 3.1 aggregate grade point average on a 4.0 scale and a team score in an NCAA regional meet, and an individual must have a 3.3 GPA and a top-25-percent regional finish. Sewanee’s men had a 3.47 GPA and individual all-academic distinction for Owen Legrone, and the female Tigers had a 3.21. Covenant’s women had a 3.62 and its men a 3.37, and Michelannn Settle, Lilly Smith, Caleb Aikens and Matthew Tueller were honored individually.

BASKETBALL

› Sewanee senior guard Hannah McCormack was named Monday the Southern Athletic Association women’s basketball player of the week after scoring 22 and 21 points and totaling 13 rebounds in two games. She surpassed 1,000 points for her Tigers career on Friday and is second in the SAA in scoring this season with 17.1 points per game

› Bryan College freshman Deandra Luna from Sparta, Tenn., is the Appalachian Athletic Conference women’s player of the week after averaging 21 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists in three games for the first-place Lady Lions. She’s averaging 12.3 points and leads the AAC with 5.5 assists a game.

› J.T. Langford scored 24 points and Tyler Phillips added 19 on 5-for-5 3-point shooting as the Georgia Northwestern men’s basketball team beat The Crown College 88-65 on Monday at the Rossville Athletic Center. Tradyal Autry had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Davantae Kimble also scored 11 and Cole McKeehan tallied 10 for the Bobcats (4-17). John Boutchia and Amir Duffer scored 26 and 19 for the Royal Crusaders.

SOFTBALL

› The Cleveland State softball team won 4-3 over East Georgia State and Shelton State with a 4-1 loss in between to host Georgia Highlands in the moved-up season-opening Border Battle last Friday. Shiane Stockwell

was the winning pitcher in both Lady Cougars victories, with eight and six strikeouts, and Bekah Copas gave up only two earned runs in six innings in the loss, when Rachel Pierce

had the RBI. She also had an RBI in the first game, when Bre Dunsmore had a double and two RBIs for Cleveland State, and Grayson Brown had two RBIs against Shelton.
