Hamilton Heights runner-up again
Despite 32 points and six assists from Tennessee signee Jazmine Massengill, the Hamilton Heights girls’ basketball team from Chattanooga lost 66-61 to Central Valley of Veradale, Wash., in the GEICO High School Nationals final Saturday in New York. It was the second runner-up finish in a row in this event for the Lady Hawks (25-3), who went in this time as ESPN’s No. 1-ranked team in the nation. Sophomore Treasure Hunt scored nine points for Hamilton Heights. Stanford signee Lexie Hull led Central Valley (29-0) with 26 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
BASEBALL
› Lee University completed a Gulf South Conference baseball sweep at Valdosta State with 6-1 and 10-5 victories Saturday. Jumpei Akanuma (4-1) allowed six hits and struck out eight batters in eight innings in the first game for the Flames (19-15, 12-6), while Spencer Mossburg batted in three runs, Jordan Howard went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and Miguel Pimentel was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mossburg started the finale with a three-run homer and went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and Howard and Pimentel each was 2-for-4 with three and two RBIs. Pimentel, Justen Freeman and
Fernando Ortiz each scored two runs.
› Bryan College lost its three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference home series against Milligan with 6-2 and 5-4 shortfalls Saturday. The NAIA’s ninth-ranked Lions (28-7, 12-3) won 8-2 on Friday as Stephen Chamblee recorded his sixth double-digit strikeout pitching performance of the season — he had 13 in eight innings — and Lake Burris was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. David Scoggins also had two RBIs, and Trevor Behrent and Cody Young each was 2-for-3 with an RBI — Behrent scoring twice. Saturday, Rodney Tennie was 3-for-4 with a homer and Scoggins was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the 5-4 game, when Burris and
Wade Weinburger each was 2-4. Scoggins was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in the other loss.
› Covenant College lost 10-8 and 5-2 in its USA South doubleheader at Huntingdon. Caleb Bloye was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Jonah Carignan was 1-for-1 with two RBIs in the first game for Covenant (9-20, 7-11), and C.J. Edmond was 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI.
› Sewanee won 3-2 and lost 8-3 at home against Hendrix in Southern Athletic Association baseball Saturday. Jake Woolard
was 2-for-4 with a homer and Riley Brandvold was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the first game for the Tigers (8-18, 3-12), who also won Friday, and Justin Lavender got the pitching win with Jackson Cook allowing one hit in two innings for the save. Drew Mancuso was 2-for-3 with a homer in the loss, and Jared Demkowicz
was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
› Cleveland State lost 14-3 and 9-7 to TCCAA-leading Walters State (34-3, 14-0). Noah Hill and Brandon Mason each was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Joey Roberson was 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBIs in the first game for the visiting Cougars (22-14, 6-9). Logan Peterson was 3-for-3 with three scores in the second game, while
Rhett Baldwin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs,
Cameron Hankins also was 2-for-3 and Hill and Hunter Oliver each was 2-for-4 and scored a run, Oliver adding an RBI.
› The Chattanooga State baseball team is in third place in the TCCAA and will play its 13th annual exhibition game against the Chattanooga Lookouts this Tuesday at AT&T Field, beginning at 6:15 p.m. General-admission tickets cost $5 and can be bought at the game or in advance through the Lookouts’ box office or Tigers coach Greg Dennis at 697-2418. The Lookouts’ season begins Thursday against Birmingham at A&T.
LACROSSE
› Brooke Winfield had four goals and an assist and Preston Cooper, Catherine Crigler, Molly Elkins and Mary Kate Myers scored two goals each as Sewanee (11-4, 4-1) won 19-3 Saturday in SAA women’s lacrosse at Berry. The Sewanee men (7-4, 3-0) won 11-6 at Centre as Jake Vaughn and Hayden Hunt each netted three goals and Tal Wharton made 13 saves.
SOFTBALL
› UTC softball coach Frank Reed will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club’s noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. It will be the club’s last meeting until further notice. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.
› Carson-Newman senior Katie Pritchett from Heritage High School was 2-for-4 with the winning two-run home run in the eighth inning of the Eagles’ 5-3 home victory Friday against Wingate. They followed that with another walk-off win, 4-3, as Pritchett went 0-for-1 with a sacrifice fly and Morgan Crawford from Ridgeland pitched the last two innings for the win. She’s 9-4 for the season; Pritchett is hitting .394 with five homers.
