Fire damages Grand Avenue home
A fire Saturday evening caused about $40,000 worth of damage to a home on Grand Avenue where five children playing outside helped in the discovery of the fire.
The fire broke out Saturday at 6:15 p.m., Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman and Battalion Chief Lesley Morgan said in a statement.
“Upon arrival it was unclear if everyone was out of the structure so firefighters with Quint 14 did a primary search,” Morgan said. All the residents were determined to already be out of the structure and unharmed, Morgan said.
The fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters and was determined to be electrical.
Firefighters praised smoke detectors and alert children.
“The working smoke detectors alerted one of the five children, who was playing outside at the time of the fire,” Morgan said. “The children entered the residence and found the fire. They then alerted the mother and all exited the residence.”
Quint 14, Quint 2, Quint 1, Squad 1, and Ladder 1 responded to the incident. Utilities, police and emergency medical agencies also responded to assist, Morgan said. The American Red Cross also responded to help the mother and five children.
The structure damage was estimated to be $60,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
