Zydeco music at Nightfall
The Foothills open for Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys
The soulful vocals of Jeffery Broussard will echo through Miller Plaza, 850 Market St., on Friday night, May 18, when Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys headline Nightfall. The band delivers Creole classics as well as their own brand of contemporary zydeco.
Local band The Foothills will open the show at 7 p.m., with Broussard taking the stage at 8 p.m.
Broussard was raised in Frilot Cove, La., the youngest of 11 children. His father, Delton Broussard, was a sharecropper and bandleader of Delton Broussard & The Lawtell Playboys. The younger Broussard grew up playing drums in his father’s band.
Over time, he learned to play each of the other instruments in the band, and by his teenage years, had settled on the accordion as his favorite.
During his teen years, Broussard played drums in his oldest brother’s band, Clinton Broussard & The Zydeco Machines. It was in this band that Broussard played the accordion in public for the first time. His brother would let him play a few songs, but he was too shy to speak onstage, let alone sing. It wasn’t until he joined the band Zydeco Force in 1988 that he began singing.
Broussard won Accordionist of the Year in 2007 from Zydeco Music and Creole Heritage Awards.
