Habitat classes cover the ABCs of DIY
Learn basics of drywall, plumbing, power tools, painting and caulking in free one-hour clinics
So many people requested Habitat for Humanity’s previous do-it-yourself home-repair classes that it’s offering more training this month and next.
And instead of being restricted to only women like the first class, this class is open to anybody age 18 and older. It’s also open to youth who are accompanied by an adult.
The series of DIY construction workshops start Tuesday with drywall basics. They continue Aug. 23 with Plumbing 101, Sept. 4 with Power Tools 101 and Sept. 13 with Painting & Caulking.
The free one-hour clinics will be held at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Ooltewah from 5 to 6 p.m.
Habitat staff will teach the classes.
Registration is required because of limited space. To register for one or all of the clinics, go to www.eventbrite. com.
This class series spun off a Women’s Build Clinic in May, says Madison Bradford, volunteer coordinator.
“We had so much of an overwhelming response of people really being interested in them that we wanted to open them up to greater communities,” she says. “So we’ve been working on some clinics this summer to allow the members of Chattanooga to attend, and we have four clinics coming up this fall.”
In addition to positive class response for the plumbing and power tools training, several people submitted surveys where they suggested having drywall basics and painting and caulking classes.
“We wanted to continue that trend and get people excited about construction and about Habitat in Chattanooga,” Bradford says.
The clinics are very basic. It doesn’t teach participants how to start and finish a house, but by attending they can gain knowledge about how to better their home, she says.
