Volleyball Mocs beat Belmont 3-0

› Lee University’s volleyball team opened Friday with a 3-1 loss (25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23) to 12th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic and another 3-1 loss (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18) to California State East Bay in the Oredigger Classic at Golden, Colorado. Lee’s Silvia Sartori had 19 and 16 kills in the two matches, and MaKayla Beebe had 25 and 17 digs. Hanna Matthews and Kylee Smith

set 22 and 18 assists against PBA and 18 and 19 against CSEB, when Allie Koepfer had 19 digs, Bailey Kress eight kills and Alex Reuter three block solos and a block assist.

› Bryan College defeated Brewton-Parker 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-15) and played William Carey late Friday in Faulkner’s tournament, and Tennessee Wesleyan lost 3-1 (25-10, 28-26, 26-28, 25-18) to Webber Internatio­nal and 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-15, 15-13) to Central Methodist. TWU’s Marjorie Smith had nine kills and Avery Hilliard and Miyah Woodard had eight apiece while Gabi Catt

had 27 assists against Webber, and Hilliard had 12 kills, Sydney Ritten added nine and Catt had 32 assists and 17 digs against CMC. Madison Weir had 12 digs. Bryan’s Paige Randolph had 10 kills, Rebecca Camacho and Maria Dunlop added eight each, Sidney Pierce and Jennifer Keck had 11 and 10 assists and Macenzie Krause had 12 digs against BPC.

› Chattanoog­a State lost its first-ever volleyball match 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-5) to Pensacola State’s establishe­d program Friday night in Snead State’s tournament. Sidney Killingwor­th had 10 digs and three blocks for the Lady Tigers, who play three times today.

› The UTC soccer team’s undefeated start to the season ended Friday night with a 6-1 loss at five-time Sun Belt champion South Alabama. USA led 3-1 at halftime,

Chloe Arnold having scored a temporary equalizer from Bailey Gale’s assist at 13:46 for UTC (2-1). The Jaguars led only 15-10 in shots but 10-2 in shots on goal.

› With an own goal created by pressure at 87:15, Dalton State tied Emory 2-2 in men’s soccer Friday in Atlanta. Steve Taylor Fallas scored for the Roadrunner­s (1-0-1) at 68:16, and Samuel Fraire made six saves. Emory scored in the 19th and 72nd minutes.

› Harry Baggaley had two goals and assisted Yuri Parisotto’s score as Tennessee Wesleyan won 3-1 at SCAD Savannah. The Bulldogs (2-0) actually put all four goals in the net, counting an own goal at 76:56. Baggaley followed with a breakaway at 89:23 for the final margin. His first score came just 4:11 into the match on an assist from Ben Timms. TWU had margins of 26-9 in shots, 15-5 in on-goal attempts and 12-3 in corner kicks.

FISHING

› Brandon Lester of Fayettevil­le, Tennessee, took the lead Friday in the Bassmaster Elite tournament on the St. Lawrence River. His five-bass limit totaling 25 pounds, 13 ounces gave him a two-day haul of 50-1. Another Tennessean, David Walker of Seviervill­e, remained second at 49-6. Wesley Strader and John Murray of Spring City were 32nd and 37th at 41-15 and 40-5, and Jacob Wheeler of Harrison moved up 20 spots but finished 55th at 38-0. The top 50 continue today.

GOLF

› The Sewanee men’s golf team goes into the 2018-19 season ranked 18th nationally in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll for NCAA Division III. Southern Athletic Associatio­n rivals Rhodes and Oglethorpe are 15th and 17th, and reigning national champion Methodist from the USA South is No. 1.
