Spitalny one short in Super Senior

Chattanoog­a’s Neil Spitalny finished one stroke short of a third consecutiv­e Tennessee Super Senior Amateur golf championhi­p — after he won the Senior Amateur in 2015 — with a 1-under par 71 for a three-day 214 Friday at Oak Ridge Country Club. Brentwood’s

Jim Webb won the Super Senior title with a 213, and Kingsport’s Tony Green was third at 217. Ooltewah’s Larry McGill tied for ninth at 224. Knoxville’s Steve Golliher won the Senior Amateur at 203 by four strokes over Williston resident Tim Jackson, who has won 20 Tennessee Golf Associatio­n tournament­s, with Mike Albonetti of Memphis third at 209. Chattanoog­a’s Tom Schreiner tied for sixth at 214, closing with a 71, and

Scott Patton tied for 12th at 219.

› University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a freshman Tomas Rodriguez and junior

Simon Bustamante advanced through two rounds Friday to the singles quarterfin­als of the inaugural Chattanoog­a Collegiate Clay Courts Championsh­ips at Manker Patten, and three UTC doubles teams won their first matches before losing in the six-school event. Those were Bustamante with Kerim Hyatt, Rodriguez with Jacob Marshall and Luke Plaisted with Kaisei Kuroki.

› The UTC women’s tennis team began its 2018-19 season Friday at Austin Peay’s tournament, and senior Delaney Edwards and sophomore Bogdana Zaporozhet­s won twice, 6-1 and 6-3, to reach the doubles Flight A semifinals. The Mocs’ Caroline Hall and Polina Goloputova won and lost together in Flight A, and Goloputova and

Emma Van Hee both reached singles Flight B quarterfin­als.

› The IcyHot Southern Junior Cup tennis tournament continues today with Gold Division singles play involving the North Carolina, South Carolina and perennial champion Georgia teams at the Champions Club, where Arkansas, Mississipp­i and Louisiana will vie for Bronze supremacy. Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky will compete in the Silver Division at Baylor School.

VOLLEYBALL

› Silvia Sartori had 14 kills and 12 digs as Lee University rose to 2-0 in Gulf South Conference volleyball with a 3-0 home win Friday night against Valdosta State. The set scores were 25-23, 25-10, 25-18. Hanna Matthews had 31 assists, Allie Koepfer

had nine kills and four aces and MaKayla Beebe made 15 digs for Lee (4-8 overall).

› Bryan College won 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-16) in its AAC match at Brenau as Rebecca Camacho and Anna Owens registered eight and seven kills and three teammates added six apiece. Rheagan Keen had 20 digs and Jennifer Keck had 17 assists for Bryan (4-8, 1-3).

› Sewanee’s nine-match volleyball win streak ended Friday night with a 3-0 home loss (25-11, 25-21, 25-18) to 24th-ranked Berry in the Tigers’ conference opener. Sydney White led Sewanee (9-2) in kills with seven, with Ellie Pederson adding six, Constance Connolly setting 21 assists and Olivia Nichols topping the team in digs with 10. Emily Hancock had 12 kills for Berry (6-2, 2-0).

› Covenant College won 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20) over Johnson & Wales and lost 3-1 to host Colorado College in the Pikes Peak Challenge. Sarah Delk and Lindsey Stephens each had 13 kills, Hannah Harris and Alexa Spurling had 12 and nine,

Sophie Puertas had 44 assists and 14 digs and Delk had 16 digs in the win. Harris and

Riley Howe had nine kills each in the loss, when Puertas had 23 assists and 11 digs.

Emily Moore had 11 digs in each match.

SOCCER

› Despite being outshot 20-11 and outcornere­d 9-4, Birmingham-Southern won 3-1 in Division III men’s soccer Friday at Covenant. BSC (5-1-1) scored at 4:14, and Mercer Stout equalized for the Scots (4-2) 66 seconds later on a cross from Jesse Riggs. The Panthers scored again at 41:34 and 60:07, the latter an own goal.

FIELD HOCKEY

› Sewanee rose to 3-1 in field hockey with a 2-1 win Friday at Becker. Ceara Caffrey scored from a Hannah Tompkins pass at 7:15, and Milly Etheridge netted a goalie deflection for a 2-0 lead at 24:13. Kadie Hicks made seven saves for Sewanee.
