Lee, Sewanee soccer sweep

Lee University won two soccer games against Gulf South Conference foe Union on Sunday in Cleveland. The women rolled 4-0, getting goals from Kate Carney, Emma Higgins and Lauren Peters plus an own goal by Union (0-10-1, 0-8). Riley Engels had an assist for the Lady Flames (8-5-1, 5-4), and Taylor Green made one save as Lee dominated by outshootin­g its visitors 23-4 overall and 12-1 on goal. In the men’s match,

Palle Jespersen had both goals in a hardearned 2-1 win for the Flames (8-3-3, 6-1-2), scoring on Samir Williams’ assist in the 25th minute and Alfie Coldron’s setup in the 85th. That sandwiched a 66th-minute score by Union (1-8-3, 1-6-2), which trailed 22-6 in shots overall and 10-2 on goal but flirted with overtime. Lee, which avoided what would have been its fourth straight OT match, dominated in corner kicks, 9-0.

› Sewanee swept Sunday’s Southern Athletic Associatio­n soccer doublehead­er against visiting Millsaps with a pair of shutouts. In the men’s 5-0 win, Kyle Johnston scored twice, Thompson Schollaert had a goal and two assists, Severin Velasco and Bobby Zolper also scored and Andrew Turk and Alop Sipila contribute­d an assist apiece. William Merriman and James Murray were in goal for the Tigers (6-7-1, 2-4) — Murray for more than 81 minutes, with a stop of the only shot on goal managed by Millsaps (3-10-1, 1-5). Sewanee, which led 4-0 at halftime, took 11 shots on goal, outshot the Majors 22-5 overall and had five corner kicks to their three. In the women’s 2-0 win, Caitlin Fahr scored on a Carter Cooper assist in the 39th minute and Maggie Gall with Paige Rupp’s help in the 59th as the Tigers (6-9-2, 3-3) finished with advantages in shots overall and on goal, 20-5 and 12-4, as well as corner kicks, 6-2. Hanna Judycki split the time in goal evenly for Sewanee, but Judycki made three saves to keep Millsaps (2-11-2, 0-6) out of the net.

› Dalton State College edged the Faulkner men 2-1 and tied the Faulkner women 0-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference soccer Saturday. The Roadrunner­s (5-7-1, 1-3) led 15-2 in shots, 8-1 in shots on goal and 10-0 in corner kicks but needed Amin Saheb’s goal from a

› University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a freshman Karim Hyatt won twice Sunday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Knoxville to reach today’s consolatio­n final against East Tennessee State’s Juan Lugo. Hyatt beat Tennessee Tech’s Carlos Vicente 6-1, 7-6 (6), then topped Indiana’s William Piekarsky 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (5). The same event’s women’s matches are being played at Champions Club, and UTC wrapped up its representa­tion there with two wins Sunday. Freshman Polina Goloputova beat Wright State’s Hailey Morgan 7-5, 6-0, and senior Caroline Hall was leading 3-0 in the first set when Vanderbilt’s Lauren Gish retired.

VOLLEYBALL

› Sewanee pushed its SAA record north of .500 again with a 3-0 home win against Millsaps on Sunday. The set scores were 25-11, 25-17, 25-13, and category leaders for the Tigers (16-7, 6-5) were Constance Connolly with 31 aces, Ellie Pedersen with 10 kills and Lilly Reilly and Destiny Stewart each with 12 digs. Reilly and Stewart each had eight kills, as did Mason Gardella, and Connolly also had eight digs. Peyton Parent added 11 digs and Sydney White nine. Millsaps fell to 7-13, 2-9.

› Georgia Northweste­rn Technical College lost twice Saturday at Judson College in Marion, Alabama, 25-18-25-18, 25-12 to Coastal Alabama Community College, and 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 to the hosts. Mia Clark totaled 34 assists and 14 kills for GNTC (6-15).

FIELD HOCKEY

› Milly Etheridge scored on Ceara Gaffrey’s assist in the 13th minute as Sewanee beat visiting Transylvan­ia 1-0 in SAA play Sunday. Rachel Blum made four saves for the Tigers (8-3, 2-1), who outshot the Pioneers (1-10, 0-4) 14-5 overall and 9-4 on goal.
