Simonsen has shot at PGA Tour event

University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a golfer Oliver Simonsen from Baylor School continued his late-summer and fall hot streak Tuesday by advancing from the first stage of qualifying for next week’s PGA Tour event at Sea Island, Georgia. With a 20-foot birdie on his last hole at the Chateau Elan course in Braselton, Simonsen shot a 1-under-par 71 and earned one of the seven spots for Monday qualifying at Brunswick Country Club for The RSM Classic. He was the only amateur to advance from the field of 82.

› The Bryan College men’s golf team won the Hiwassee Fall Invitation­al by one stroke over Pikeville (Kentucky), 611 to 612, in the six-team event played Monday and Tuesday at Oak Ridge Country Club. Columbia Internatio­nal was third at 613. Bryan’s Andres Arteaga tied for third individual­ly at 4-over 148 with fellow Lions Peter Brown and Kevin Knudsen eighth and ninth at 152 and 153. Zach Belvin tied for 15th at 158. Hiwassee’s Andrew Susong and Peyton Holland, playing as individual­s, tied for 17th at 159 and 22nd at 165.

WRESTLING

› A championsh­ip win over a teammate helped UTC sophomore Fabian Gutierrez be chosen the 2018-19 season’s first Southern Conference wrestler of the week. Gutierrez won the 125-pound open division of the Hokie Open in Virginia with four victories, including a pin of the Mocs’ all-conference Alonzo Allen in the weight-class final. His previous wins were over wrestlers from Campbell, Indiana and North Carolina. UTC hosts 21st-ranked UNC at 2 p.m. Sunday in Maclellan Gym.

SOCCER

› A quick goal by Siobhan Patterson and two scores by Livia Walker led No. 2 seed Tennessee Wesleyan to a 3-1 home win Wednesday against third seed Reinhardt and the host spot in the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference women’s soccer final Friday against fourth seed Milligan (11-6-1), which upset Truett McConnell 2-0 on Tuesday. Patterson netted a rebound shot at 1:47, and Walker converted a double assist by Els van Hooijdonk and Lauren Cunningham at 23:32. Walker made it 3-1 at 72:13. The Lady Bulldogs (11-5-1) led 26-10 in shots and 11-3 in shots on goal.

› Dalton State junior midfielder Daniel Valenciano made the All-SSAC men’s soccer first team, and senior defender Isael Gutierrez was a second-team selection. The 7-9-2 Roadrunner­s’ SSAC tournament semifinal scheduled for Wednesday night against Bethel in Montgomery, Alabama, was moved to today at noon EST for weather reasons. Dalton State forward Adriana Delgado was a women’s all-freshman pick.

VOLLEYBALL

› UTC lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 29-27) in SoCon volleyball Wednesday night at Samford (15-14, 10-5) but got 11 kills on a .588 hitting percentage from Mikaela Gauthreaux. Also for the Mocs (9-19, 5-10), Gylian Finch had nine kills, Ally Ford seven kills, Jaquelyn Langhaim 19 assists, Maddie Halsey 12 assists and Brenna Everingham 12 digs.

BASKETBALL

› The Bryan basketball teams won their AAC openers Wednesday at home against Point. The Lady Lions (2-1) won 75-63 with 15 points from Amber Levi, 12 with four 3-pointers from Karli Combs, 11 apiece from Sarah Cain and Tristan McClellan and 10 plus seven assists from Deandra Luna. To’Nesha Allison grabbed nine rebounds; Luna and Cain each had seven. E.J. Bush had 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the 3-2 Bryan men’s 91-79 victory, while Keaton Dotson and Brandon Thomas scored 14 and 13 points and Austin Douglas added 10 with seven rebounds. In another AAC doublehead­er, Tennessee Wesleyan defeated the Montreat women 73-52 behind Hunter Simpson’s 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists but lost 76-69 to the Montreat men.

› Abby Dalton had 21 points and five steals as the Georgia Northweste­rn women won their home opener Tuesday against Dalton State’s club team, 73-55. Also for GNTC (1-1), Jerriale Jackson had 13 points and seven rebounds, Connor Sullivan had 11 points and four steals and Tori Harvey had 11 rebounds and six steals with nine points.
