Inmate, others charged in prison fraud scheme

Chattanooga Times Free Press - - OBITUARIES - WIRE REPORTS

A state inmate is among those charged with conning another inmate’s family into paying a fake law firm to work on his case.

The Alabama Department of Corrections announced the charges Friday.

The department said the suspects are accused of using fake identities to lure an inmate’s family into paying a fictitious law firm.

The department said the suspects led the family to believe the firm could get charges against their family member dropped, or sentence reduced. They instructed the family to wire money or pay with prepaid cards.

State inmate Trederris Cowan was charged with theft, identity theft and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. It was not clear from court records if he has a lawyer.

Four other people were arrested and there is an outstanding warrant for another.
