Rising gasoline prices have helped push inflation higher, eroding the value of Americans’ pay

checks.

Yet core prices remain close to the Federal Reserve’s target of 2 percent and have yet to show signs of rapid acceleration. Prices at the consumer level rose 2.5 percent in October from a year earlier. The Labor Department issues its snapshot of consumer prices in November on Wednesday.
