Lee teams rout basketball foes

Lee University routed visiting Fort Valley State 89-50 in women’s basketball Saturday. Becca Cheeks and Abby Bertram each scored 16 points, Cheeks with 13 rebounds and Bertram with four assists, for the Lady Flames (6-2), and Camryn Grant scored 11.

Haley Schubert had five steals with nine points.

› The Lee men blasted Martin Methodist 72-48 with 18 points apiece from Ryan Montgomery and Colton Blevins and nine assists from Kentrell Evans. Montgomery was 7-of-9 from the field. Also for the Flames (3-5), Michael McGuirk scored 12 points.

› Covenant College senior Joanna Smith

from Chattanooga Christian became the 22nd player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points as the Lady Scots beat visiting Webster 83-74 on Saturday. She led them with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Taylor Robinson had 13 points and four steals and Kaley Hallmark had eight steals with 12 points.

Raquel Rosa added 10 points for Covenant (2-6). The teams combined for 63 turnovers.

› Cleveland State defeated the Volunteer State men 78-73 and beat the Lady Pioneers 59-54 in a TCCAA doubleheader Saturday in Cleveland. In the win for the Cougars (4-8, 2-4), Darius Turman had 24 points and seven rebounds, Jonathan King 17 points and six rebounds and Delaine Walker 14 points. The Lady Cougars (3-8, 2-3) got 20 points from Jordan Smith and 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots from

Britnay Gore. Hannah Phillips added 10 points and eight rebounds.

› Chattanooga State lost 100-88 at home to Motlow State in TCCAA men’s basketball Saturday. That dropped the Tigers to 6-4 overall, 3-3 in league play.

› Tennessee Wesleyan pulled out two three-point Appalachian Athletic Conference wins Saturday at Bluefield: 63-60 in the women’s game and 61-58 in the men’s. For the TWU men (8-3, 4-2), Ty Patterson had 20 points and seven rebounds, Jalen Oliver 16 points, Djimon Wilson 11 rebounds and

Todd Lansden 10 rebounds. Bluefield’s men are 10-3, 5-3. The Lady Bulldogs (6-4, 4-4) got 22 points and 13 rebounds from Hunter Simpson, 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from

› The Georgia Northwestern women won their Lady Bobcat Holiday Bash with a 61-40 victory Saturday evening against Trinity Baptist College from Jacksonville, Florida. The GNTC men earlier played Southeastern Baptist from Mississippi but lost 76-68 after leading by 11 points in the first half. Gracen Hobbs hit five 3s and totaled 17 points with 10 rebounds and Jerriale Jackson had 18 rebounds with 11 points in the third win in a row for the Lady Bobcats (4-6). They also got 12 points from Abby Dalton, 10 with three 3s from Mia Clark and eight rebounds and four assists from Tori Harvey. For the Bobcats (2-6), Jayce Harris scored 16 points, Kannen Derryberry had 14 with four 3s, Justin Smith added 11 and Mark Chester grabbed nine rebounds. Trajan Fielder scored 28 for Southeastern Baptist.

RUNNING

› Red Bank High School senior Cole Bullock finished 21st out of 40 runners in the 40th Foot Locker Cross Country Championships boys’ national race Saturday in San Diego. In a tightly packed field of the 10 best from each of four regions, Bullock completed the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 2.8 seconds — well off his season-best 14:54 in a Knoxville race. “I was happy just coming here, and very honored — there were a lot of great runners — but I feel I didn’t do my best today,” the Ole Miss signee said by phone. “But I’m very grateful.” The start was “rough,” he said, with “a lot of pushing and elbowing” on a relatively narrow course. “You just try to stay calm and stay in the pack, and basically that’s what happened,” Bullock added. Cole Hocker of Indianapolis was the winner in 15:13.7 with Knoxville’s Jake Renfree second in 15:19.5. The girls’ winner was Sydney Masciarelli of Northbridge, Massachusetts, in 17:00.3.

VOLLEYBALL

› Tennessee Wesleyan junior middle hitter Avery Hilliard followed up her 2018 All-AAC first-team selection by receiving honorable mention on the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s NAIA All-Northeast Region team. In helping the Lady Bulldogs win a program-high 16 regular-season matches, Hilliard totaled 262 kills and set TWU season records of 137 total blocks and 88 block assists and corresponding career records of 321 and 190. Her 13 kills in 17 attempts against Piedmont International set a single-match standard for hitting percentage, and her seven block solos against Point tied her TWU single-match record from 2017. She led the AAC in total blocks, block solos and blocks per set.
