Sewanee splits in SAA hoops

Sewanee split its Southern Athletic Associatio­n basketball doublehead­er Sunday at Millsaps, with the men’s team winning 68-67 and the women losing 68-55. For the victorious Tigers (14-4, 3-4), who trailed 36-34 at halftime but rallied with a 10-run in the second half, Cam Caldwell scored 27 points with two blocks and two steals, Hunter Buescher added 16 with four steals, Luke Smith chipped in 13 points and Jonny Crumly grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. The scoring was very balanced for the Majors (10-8, 2-5), whose only player in double-digit points was James Turner with 13. In the women’s game, Sewanee (7-11, 1-6) trailed 12-10, 29-18, 52-25 at the quarter breaks. The Tigers were led by Abby Young’s 16 points and Kinsley Logan’s 15 with three steals, and Ellie Treanton grabbed nine rebounds and Sue Kim notched seven assists. Millsaps (15-3, 6-1) had three players who scored in double digits — Morgan McCrea (18 points), Taelor Manning (17) and Anna Wilson (10), Manning with 14 rebounds. Millicent Butler had 11 assists.

› Bryan College beat the visiting Bluefield women and men 67-61 and 86-80 in Appalachia­n Athletic Conference games Saturday. Deandra Luna had 17 points, five assists and four steals and Karli Combs made five 3-point shots for the league-leading Lady Lions (17-1, 15-0), while Tristan McClellan scored 11 points and To’Nesha Allison had seven rebounds. For the Lions (10-10, 7-7), Brandon Thomas and EJ Bush scored 23 and 20 points and Isaiah McClain added 14.

› Hunter Simpson had 27 points with 17 made free throws, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals as the Tennessee Wesleyan women won 77-70 Saturday in an AAC game at home against Reinhardt, which beat them 81-52 on Nov. 14. Hannah Cherry and

Jacobi Lynn added 13 and 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs (10-7, 8-7). Ringgold’s Bethany Headrick had 13 rebounds and six assists with 11 points for Reinhardt (11-8, 10-6). The Eagles won the men’s game 97-87, led by

Latroy Strong’s 30 points and 10 rebounds. QD Cox and Ty Patterson had 23 and 22 points for the Bulldogs (8-10, 4-9), Cox with seven 3s, while Jalen Oliver had 14 points and five assists and Todd Lansden contribute­d 10 rebounds and four blocks.

TENNIS

› The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s tennis team lost the home opener of its spring semester schedule Sunday, falling 4-3 to Austin Peay at McCallie’s Strang-Voges indoor center. The Mocs (0-2) earned the doubles point as No. 1 Delaney Edwards and Emma Van Hee won 7-5 and No. 3 Lilly Holmes and Bogdona Zaporozhet­s won 6-4, and UTC’s two singles points came from Zaporozhet­s at No. 4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, and Holmes at No. 6, 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (102). Austin Peay is 2-0.

WRESTLING

Michael Murphy,

› a four-time state champion for Baylor School who is now a sophomore at Virginia, won the 149-pound championsh­ip of the prestigiou­s Franklin & Marshall Open wrestling tournament Jan. 12 in Lancaster, Pennsylvan­ia. Murphy had a technical fall and a major decision among his five match victories against wrestlers from F&M, Navy, Maryland, North Carolina State and Drexel.

BASEBALL

› McCallie School senior

Chad Marsh recently signed to continue his baseball career at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.

Marsh had the second-highest batting average, .354, for the Blue Tornado last season and led the team with 10 doubles. He also had a home run, stole nine bases, scored

27 runs and batted in 17.

› Chattanoog­a State’s annual baseball pancake breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, 9-11:30 a.m., in the school cafeteria. The meal costs $5, and proceeds go to the Tigers baseball program. Reservatio­ns are not necessary.
