BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

Dalton Youth Theatre opens ‘Shrek the Musical, Jr.’

- STAFF REPORT

Director Douglas McClure and cast will open “Shrek the Musical, Jr.” on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Dalton Little Theatre, 210 N. Pentz St., Dalton, Georgia.

DLT’s Youth Ensemble Theatre will present six performances of the musical, inspired by the 2001 DreamWorks animated film. Shows are at 7 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays, Jan. 25-26 and Feb. 1-2; 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 2.

A special sensory-sensitive performance will be presented Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. This performance will be an opportunity for families with children or adults on the autism spectrum, or with sensory processing difficulties, to attend a live theatre event in a judgment-free environment. The tech crew will alter the theatre’s seating, lights and sound to create a comfortable setting for its sensory-sensitive audience.

“Shrek, Jr.” tells the adventures of an ogre, his donkey sidekick and the princess they set out to rescue.

It’s a once-upon-a-time fantasy that starts in a swamp and ends in a castle. As the story opens, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairy-tale misfits who tell him they have been cast out of the kingdom by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions, and all have lost their homes — including Shrek.

When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task — if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be returned. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 DLT members and senior adults, $10 students. Tickets are $10 for the sensory-sensitive performance.
