Concerts feature SAU students and faculty

Two free concerts are scheduled today and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 9, on the campus of Southern Adventist University in Ackerman Auditorium, 4881 Taylor Circle in Collegedal­e. › What: Saxophone Recital featuring Clint Schmitt › When: 7:30 p.m. today, Feb. 7

Clint Schmitt, playing saxophone, will be joined in his faculty recital by guest artists Holly Mulcahy, violin, and Tim Hinck, piano. They will perform three selections: “Come Down Heavy” by Evan Chambers; “Life, in Three Movements” by Dr. Jonathan McNair; and the “Trio Sonata” by Jim Stephenson III.

Schmitt teaches saxophone at Southern, University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a and Lee University. He has performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Opera Company of Boston and the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Mulcahy is the concertmas­ter of the Chattanoog­a Symphony & Opera. Hinck, a Southern alumnus, is a concert pianist and composer. › What: An Evening of Popular Music ›

The School of Music invites the community to an evening of popular music presented by a variety of SAU instrument­al and vocal ensembles.

Under the direction of conductors Ken Parsons, Genevieve Brown-Kibble and Laurie Cooper, the concert will feature selections on the theme of “Heavy Weather,” as well as classics from the American songbook.

Performing will be Southern’s Wind Symphony Orchestra, Die Meistersin­ger, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble.
