Barrett’s triple-double lifts No. 2 Duke

-

DURHAM, N.C. — RJ Barrett always seems to do it all for No. 2 Duke. This time, it showed up on the stat sheet.

The freshman had the program’s first triple-double in 13 years, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and a season-high 10 assists in the Blue Devils’ 94-78 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday night.

Zion Williamson scored 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Tre Jones added 13 to help the Blue Devils (23-2, 11-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) win their ninth straight.

“My teammates were obviously finishing, and it was great to play with them, especially, Zion at the end, just grabbing everything, finishing everything,” Barrett said.

Barrett became the fourth Duke player with a triple-double and the first since Shelden Williams in January 2006. He completed it in the final minute, hitting Williamson for a layup that put Duke up 90-74.

“I wouldn’t say satisfying, but I’m glad I could help, because he is my brother,” Williamson said with a smile. “If it was anybody, I’m glad it was me.”

Duke overcame 19 percent shooting from 3-point range by building a 44-26 rebounding advantage and scoring 22 points off N.C. State’s 12 turnovers.

Markell Johnson had 16 points and 10 assists, Torin Dorn scored 17 points and C.J. Bryce added 13 points for the Wolfpack (18-8, 6-7), who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

Hunter scored six points during a 9-0 run for the Cavaliers (22-2, 10-2 ACC) after the Fighting Irish closed to within 45-44 with 8:12 left.

But Notre Dame (13-12, 3-9) then went more than five minutes without a point as Hunter scored inside and hit four free throws. Guy added a 3-pointer and it was 54-44 with less than five minutes to play.

T.J. Gibbs scored 17 and D.J. Harvey had 10 for Notre Dame.

› No. 6 Michigan 65, No. 24 Maryland 52

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift Michigan to a victory over Maryland.

The Wolverines (23-3, 12-3 Big Ten) rebounded from their loss at Penn State earlier in the week. Michigan raced out to a 14-2 advantage and led by as much as 15 in the first half. It was a struggle for the Wolverines after that, but the fast start was too much for Maryland (197, 10-5) to overcome.

Bruno Fernando scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Terrapins.

› No. 8 North Carolina 95, Wake Forest 57

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Cameron Johnson scored 27 points, and North Carolina scored the game’s first 18 points in a win over Wake Forest.

Freshman Coby White added 10 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Tar Heels (20-5, 10-2 ACC), who dominated from the tip following their first loss in a month.

Freshman Jaylen Hoard scored 17 points in an ugly afternoon for the Demon Deacons (9-15, 2-10), who suffered their most lopsided loss in three decades at Joel Coliseum.

› No. 12 Purdue 76, Penn State 64

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Carsen Edwards scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and Matt Haarms added a career-high 18 points to lead Purdue past Penn State.

› No. 14 Kansas 78, West Virginia 53

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Devon Dotson and K.J. Lawson each scored 15 points, and Kansas beat depleted West Virginia.

Dedric Lawson, K.J.’s brother, had 14 points for the Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12), who won their third straight as they continue to start four freshmen.

Lamont West and Chase Harler scored 11 points apiece for West Virginia (10-15, 2-10), which struggled without former starters Esa Ahmed and Wesley Harris, who were dismissed from the team earlier in the week for violating athletic department policies.

› No. 15 Texas Tech 86, Baylor 61

LUBBOCK, Texas — Jarrett Culver scored 18 points and Davide Moretti added 17 as Texas Tech cruised past short-handed and turnover-prone Baylor.

Jared Butler scored 16 points and Mario Kegler added 15 for the Bears.

Texas Tech (21-6, 9-4 Big 12) stayed in second place in the Big 12 by using an uncharacteristic hot hand from 3-point range to surge into a first-half lead that was never threatened.

Texas Tech finished 12-of29 on 3-pointers.

The Bears (16-9, 7-5) struggled with 19 turnovers that led to 25 points for Texas Tech.

› No. 16 Louisville 56, Clemson 55

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Christen Cunningham scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to rally Louisville, which hung on for a victory over Clemson.

The Cardinals (18-8, 9-4 ACC) led 56-49 with 17 seconds left after a free throw by Steven Enoch but then nearly lost a third straight in disastrous fashion. Louisville saw a 23-point second-half lead evaporate against No. 2 Duke on Tuesday.

A turnover and a held ball in the Tigers end led to a pair of 3-pointers by Marcquise Reed, the latter making it a one-point game with 3 seconds left. Louisville’s Jordan Nwora tried to inbound the ball, but Reed got the steal. Nwora redeemed himself by blocking Reed’s shot, and Clemson could not get off another shot before time ran out.

Elijah Thomas led the Tigers (15-10, 5-7) with 15 points.

ATLANTA — Christ Koumadje had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Florida State tied a school record with its seventh straight ACC win, beating Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech (11-15, 3-10) lost its seventh straight ACC game with another offensive struggle.

Tech guard Jose Alvarado broke out of a lengthy slump with 17 points, but the Yellow Jackets made just 8 of 36 shots from inside the 3-point arc and shot 34.8 percent overall.

› No. 22 Virginia Tech 70, Pittsburgh 64

PITTSBURGH — Kenny Blackshear scored a season-high 29 points, Ahmed Hill added 14 and Virginia Tech held off slumping Pittsburgh.

The Hokies (20-5, 9-4 ACC) have won two straight following a two-game losing streak and avoided a letdown ahead of a visit from rival and fourth-ranked Virginia this week by fending off several surges by the Panthers.

Xavier Johnson led Pitt (12-14, 2-11) with 18 points.

› No. 21 Iowa 71, Rutgers 69

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Joe Wieskamp banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second to play to give Iowa a win over Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights appeared on the verge of their second upset of a ranked team this season when Gio Baker got a friendly roll on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3.3 seconds to play to put Rutgers (12-13, 5-10 Big Ten) ahead 69-68.

After Iowa (20-5, 9-5) called a time out, Connor McCaffrey threw a length of the court pass that Rutgers’ Eugene Omoruyi deflected. The ball went to Wieskamp in the corner next to the Hawkeyes’ bench and his off-balance, high-arching shot hit off the backboard and went in the basket, setting off a wild celebration on the Iowa bench.
