Wofford snaps 43-game streak to beat UTC women

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team lost its third consecutive Southern Conference game Saturday at Wofford, 64-60. That snapped a 43-game regular-season winning streak over the Terriers in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The Mocs fell to 11-14 overall and 6-4 in league play and are one game in the loss column ahead of the Terriers (14-12, 6-5).

Junior Lakelyn Bouldin scored a game-high 21 points and in doing so became the 29th member of the UTC women’s 1,000-point club. She was 9-of-16 from the field and was the only Moc in double figures. Brooke Burns added nine points and five rebounds, with Bria Dial adding seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds.

Wofford’s Chloe Wanink scored 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. Also in double figures for the Terriers were Jamari McDavid with 12 points and Niyah Lutz with 11.

The Terriers, who led by three at halftime, scored the first five points of the third quarter, but the Mocs responded, outscoring Wofford 12-4 over the next 3:57 to tie it at 40 with 3:04 left in the period. The game was tied at 46 entering the final quarter, but Wofford opened it with a 12-0 run, helped in part by four UTC turnovers. Cairo Booker started the run with five quick points, Wanink adding five more for a 58-46 lead with 5:56 to play.

Dial had a putback to snap the run and sparked a 12-2 surge for the Mocs, capped by a Bouldin 3-pointer with 1:19 to play that cut the margin to two.

A jump shot by Alexis Tomlin pushed Wofford’s lead back to five and a miss by the Mocs gave the ball back to the Terriers to all but seal the win.

UTC will close out its home slate this week against Samford on Thursday and Mercer on Saturday.
