TBI probes officer-involved shooting
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved fatal shooting that happened Sunday in Claiborne County, Tennessee, after Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers chased a woman first in a car, then on foot before they say she pulled a gun.
The TBI said preliminary information indicates that around 2 p.m. Sunday, state troopers attempted to stop a vehicle — the subject of a ‘be on the lookout’ advisory — on U.S. Highway 25E in the town of Bean Station in Grainger County, Tennessee. The woman driving failed to stop and led troopers on a pursuit into Claiborne County and onto Lone Mountain Road, the TBI said in a news release.
Initial reports indicate the woman stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Leffew Lane, got out of the car, and fled on foot into a field. Troopers pursued her on foot. The woman produced a handgun and troopers fired at her, striking her, officials said. The woman died at the scene.
The woman’s name was being withheld Sunday evening pending the notification of relatives. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, the TBI said. Results of the investigation will be turned over to 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler.
