San Juan is set for golf regional

- STAFF REPORTS

As expected, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Monica San Juan received Wednesday an at-large spot in an NCAA women’s golf regional after winning the Southern Conference tournament. The three-time All-SoCon honoree will be in the Auburn Regional May 6-8 at Saugahatchee Country Club as one of six individuals joining 18 teams. “Coach (Colette Murray) told me it was very possible,” San Juan said in a UTC release. “It was a bit of a relief, though, to see it on the screen. I’m very excited, especially with the way I finished. I think I have a few more good rounds to play.” She has the third lowest career stroke average in program history, 75.08, and her 73.94 this year is the third best for a season.

SOCCER

Steve Hirayama will take over as the director of coaching for the Chattanooga Football Club Academy. Hirayama coached with CFC head coach and general manager

Bill Elliott at the University of West Florida and has directed soccer clubs in Tennessee, Texas and Florida. More than 30 CFC Academy players from the class of 2019 have signed or committed to play collegiate soccer.

BASEBALL

Covenant College senior outfielder

John Mitchell made the 2019 All-USA South second team in league baseball awards announced Wednesday, and junior catcher

Ken Alexander was the Scots’ representative on the all-sportsmanship team. Mitchell is batting .341 with three home runs, 42 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.

In an NAIA baseball showdown Tuesday, No. 2-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan defeated visiting No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett 9-5. For TWU (41-8), Aloysius Cruz was 2-for4 with a home run and three RBIs, Adrian

Marquez also homered and Max Draijer was 3-for-3 with two walks, two stolen bases, three runs and two RBIs. Gwinnett is 36-10.

FOOTBALL

Central High School running back

Michael McGhee has committed to continue his football career at Sewanee. McGhee, who has a 3.95 grade point average, had rushed for more than 900 yards last season before suffering a leg fracture in the sixth game and surpassed 4,000 for his four years as a starter. He ultimately picked Sewanee over Centre from the same Division III league partly because of the proximity, largely because of its academic prestige and also because “they have truly shown me love,” he said. “They had been talking to me since my junior year, and even after I broke my leg they gave me support.” Central coach Curt Jones said the 5-foot-8, 200-pounder epitomizes an ideal student-athlete. “He’s a leader and he always looks for opportunities to lead,” Jones said. “He’s been a perfect role model. He does the right things when nobody’s looking.”

SOFTBALL

Third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan beat sixth seed Milligan 5-2, but Bryan lost 14-2 to top seed Truett McConnell in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball tournament Wednesday in Kingsport. Austyn Durham and Allison

Walker had RBIs for Bryan (20-27); Chattanoogan Brie Levy was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and three runs scored for Truett (42-7). For Wesleyan (28-7), Olivia Housewright was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Baylee Sutton was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and

Courtney Calkins and Cheyenne Strong combined to pitch a five-hitter — Strong with two hitless innings and four strikeouts.

TENNIS

Sewanee senior Jack Gray from Chattanooga and Baylor School was the Southern Athletic Association men’s tennis player of the week after winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles against Washington & Lee and taking tough doubles matches with Andres Carro against W&L and third-ranked Emory.

LACROSSE

TWU sophomore midfielder Jaylan Steen was the AAC men’s lacrosse offensive player of the week, and junior goalie Patrick DeMoss was the defensive honoree. Steen had six goals and three assists and DeMoss had 25 saves in two matches.
