Council Fire wins team titles
Teams from Council Fire Golf Club won the top two divisions in the Chattanooga Women’s City team low-ball tournament Monday at Brainerd. Samantha Griffith, Colette Murray, Amy Long and Darlene Werhnyak won the A Division with a gross score of 61, and Patty Donahoo, Carlene Ryon, Phyllis Loftsgard and Lisa Lowery-Smith were the B victors with a 69. Brainerd’s Joyce Parker, Katie Young, Diane Bunch and Donna Chandler won the C Division with a 73. For the first time the CWGA also honored the team low-net winners in each flight, and Valleybrook foursomes won all three: Susan Thurman, Seong Glickman, Wanda Harrelson and
Jeanie Reedy in A with a net 55 and a sudden-death playoff; Theresa Walter, Judy Acuff, Lynn Heck and Jean Hudgins in B with a 55; and Maggie Massey, Sharon Schorle, Evelyn Williams and Gail Gann in C with a 51. There were 92 players on 23 teams representing nine area clubs. The women’s city individual tournament will be held next week (July 15-17) at Brainerd.
› The Women’s Golf Coaches Association announced its 2019 18Birdies WGCA All-American Scholars for college players with cumulative grade point averages of 3.50 or better, and three each from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Lee University and two from Sewanee were included. The UTC All-American Scholars were Southern Conference tournament champion Monica San Juan and Kirsty Beckwith, seniors this past season, and freshman Esme Hamilton. Lee was represented by juniors Haverly Harrold, Annika Gino and Judianne Speach and Sewanee by seniors Natalie Javadi (of Chattanooga) and Sophie Morrill. Another honoree was Middle Tennessee State senior Jenna Burris from Manchester, who prepped at St. Andrew’s-Sewanee.
