All-SoCon honors for Massey, Smith

University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a center midfielder Hollie Massey made the 2019 All-Southern Conference women’s soccer second team, and Mackenzie Smith was included on the all-freshman team. The league awards were announced Tuesday. Massey led the Mocs with 11 points this season — three goals and five assists — and Smith most notably scored the winning goal against The Citadel and assisted on winners against Lipscomb and Wofford.

› Lee University senior goalkeeper­s Daniel Hrenko and Taylor Green were the Gulf South Conference soccer defenders of the week. Hrenko guarded the net in two 1-0 victories for the men and leads the GSC with eight shutouts this season. Green, an Ooltewah resident, also had back-to-back shutouts for the Lady Flames, one with two overtimes, and leads the league with nine clean sheets.

› No. 2 seed Tennessee Wesleyan edged 10th seed Point 2-1 in an Appalachia­n Athletic Conference women’s tournament quarterfin­al Tuesday in Athens, but fifth seed Bryan College ended its season at 9-10 with a 5-1 loss at Milligan. Siobhan Patterson and Elisa Piquero scored in the 12th consecutiv­e win for TWU (16-2), which will face Reinhardt (13-5-1) in the semifinals Saturday at Truett McConnell. Both Lady Bulldogs goals were double-assisted, by Hannah Dearing and Chloe Rootes in the first half and Helene LiumNyhus and Julia Ruiz Vargas in the 68th minute. Bryan averted a shutout on Arielle Hansford’s goal in the 61st minute.

› Dalton State ended its soccer regular season Tuesday with a 2-0 men’s win and a 1-0 women’s loss in Southern States Athletic Conference play at Brewton-Parker. Amin Saheb Ettabaa and Noah Thomas scored early in the second half for the Roadrunner­s (13-4-1, 5-3), who outshot the Barons 16-1, 9-0 on goal, and will host Martin Methodist in an SSAC tournament quarterfin­al Saturday at 3 p.m. The DSC women (6-10, 2-6) are seeded sixth and will play at Bethel.

GOLF

› The UTC men’s golfers shot 3-under-par 285 Tuesday in their final round of 2019 and tied for seventh at 871 in the 21-team East Bay Deli Classic at Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Auburn won by 15 shots with an 833. UTC got 70s from Will Porter and Oliver Simonsen, and Simonsen and A.J. Lintunen tied for 24th in the tournament at 216 with Porter and Connor Nolan (playing as an individual) sharing 43rd at 219. Leon Bader tied for 49th at 220.

VOLLEYBALL

› Lee lost 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) in GSC volleyball Tuesday at Alabama-Huntsville (21-7, 11-1). Bailey Kress had 10 kills, Hanna Matthews 30 assists, Micaela McMichen 26 digs and Abby Stroh seven kills for the Lady Flames (9-19, 2-11), and Mackenzie Pearson served five aces.

BASKETBALL

› Kerry Pratt scored 31 points and Jon Morgan had 18 with four 3-point baskets as Cleveland State’s men pulled out a 68-66 basketball home win Tuesday night against Snead State. Jadakiss Williams had 10 rebounds for the Cougars (2-1). The Lady Cougars lost 84-78 to Snead but got 20 points from Za’kkria Robinson, 14 plus five assists from Asjah Harrell, 12 points from Britnay Gore and 13 rebounds from Charisma Barner.
