Higher prices seen

Inflation has crept higher in recent months, reflecting rising prices for cars, household furnishing­s and other goods.

The consumer price index rose 1.3% in August from a year earlier. Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, is running 1.7% higher than a year ago. Economists forecast consumer prices rose again on an annual basis last month. The Labor Department issues its September snapshot of consumer prices today.
