Time to enter the 2020 Wrapping Paper Design Contest
Like so many customs altered by the coronavirus this year, the Lin C. Parker Wrapping Paper Design Contest will have a new twist for 2020. Rather than mailing or hand-delivering their entries to the Times Free Press newsroom, which is virtually empty, young artists submitting entries are asked to upload their holiday-themed designs to our website. Thanks in advance to parents or teachers called upon to assist with that step.
The contest seeks original, holiday-themed drawings from students in grades 1-5. Finalists will be determined by popular vote from judges representing the Times Free Press, ArtsBuild, Creative Discovery Museum and United Way of Greater Chattanooga.
The winning design will be enlarged to the size of a newspaper broadsheet, printed on premium paper and inserted in the newspaper on Sunday, Dec. 20, for use as holiday gift wrap. Designs by several runners-up will be featured on the flip side. An online gallery will be available for Readers’ Choice voting.
The winning artist will be featured with a story and photograph in the newspaper and also receive a cash prize of $25.
Last year’s winner was Lila Taslimi, an 8-year-old third-grader at Bright School, who drew a likeness of the Elf on the Shelf playing hide-and-seek in a chimney.
Students may draw whatever holiday theme inspires them, but their designs must be original. As in years past, they should draw their design on a sheet of plain white paper. Only the submission process should be computer-aided.
The wrapping paper contest has been a tradition for the Times Free Press since 2002 and was renamed to memorialize its founder after her death in September 2017. Parker was a longtime writer and page designer for the newspaper, as well as an accomplished artist.
