Stingy Lady Tigers win at Northwest
The Ringgold High School girls’ basketball team used an old-fashioned defense-first game plan to earn a tasty nonregion win Saturday afternoon at Northwest Whitfield, 39-28.
The Lady Tigers (4-1) used stingy defense to make an early 11-point lead easily stand up in a battle of programs that annually contend for postseason honors in Georgia. Ringgold, which has made the playoffs in all but one of Margaret Stockburger’s seven seasons as head coach, held a 15-4 lead after one period as Caroline Hemphill scored all six of her points and Riley Nayadley had five of her game-high 11.
Nayadley, who recently joined Hemphill as Class AAA softball all-state performers, scored six points in the final quarter and finished with six rebounds, while Maggie Reed added 10 points and Rachel Lopez five assists to go with six points.
Emma Allen led Northwest (1-3) with 10 points.
Stockburger won 326 games at Northwest Whitfield before retiring from Whitfield County in 2011, having guided the Lady Bruins to nine state playoff berths. This is the second win for Ringgold over Northwest this season; the Lady Tigers won 43-32 late last month in the season opener.
› Silverdale Baptist 59, Christian Heritage 56: The Lady Seahawks (6-4) benefited from clutch free throws by Tori Gibson, Ryleigh Hoover and Becca Lamb, who were a combined 9-of-10 from the line in the fourth quarter. Hoover (16 points) and Lamb (17 points) had a combined seven 3-pointers. Christian Heritage’s Faith Humphrey scored 21 points, and Haddie Chambers added 14.
› Trion 52, Armuchee 39: The Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in GHSA Region 6-A public as Chloe Murdock poured in 21 points and Jenna Mosley 12 in the win Friday.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
› Heritage 62, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 57: The Generals (4-4) avenged a 20-point loss a week earlier to their Catoosa County rivals as Cooper Terry and Caden Snyder had 21 and 14 points, respectively. Terry had 11 and Snyder nine — all on 3-pointers — in the final quarter as Heritage overcame a ninepoint deficit. Amari Burnett led LFO (5-2) with 18 points, with Cameron Gregg adding 14.
› LaFayette 64, Ringgold 39: DeCameron Porter had 25 points, including 13 in the third quarter, and Aidan Hadaway added 17 for the Ramblers (4-0, 3-0 6-AAA) in Friday’s win.
› LFO 69, North Murray 51: The Warriors rolled to the 6-AAA win Friday behind 16 points apiece from Brent Bowman, Ja Michael Davis and Dee Calhoun, who also had 11 rebounds.
› Sonoraville 71, Adairsville 67: The Phoenix (3-0, 2-0 6-AAA) overcame a hot start Friday by the Tigers behind Orry Darnell (16 points), Murray Somers (15) and Kevin Morrison (14).
› Tyner 69, Brainerd 51: Six Tyner players scored in the first quarter as the Rams jumped out to a 19-2 lead they would not relinquish in Friday’s District 6-AA clash at Brainerd. Amarion Dillard led all with 20 points, while Tyner was also sparked by Anthony Sims (12) and Latavious Conyers, who scored seven of his nine in the opening frame. Scoring in double figures for Brainerd were Edward Byrdsong (12), Xiyeeer Lattimore (10) and Keon Wheeler (10).
› McMinn County 69, Walker Valley 67: The Cherokees trailed 36-31 at halftime Friday, but came back thanks to strong shooting inside the arc and at the foul line, where they were 18-of-25. Hayden Frank and Ty Runyan scored 16 each in the District 5-AAA home win, while Parker Bebb and Jalan James added 12 and 11, respectively. Walker Valley made 10 3-pointers and was led by Seth Sausville (17 points) and 13 apiece from Heath Davis, Cole Harbison and Hayden Moore.
WRESTLING
Northwest Whitf ield retained the Conasauga Cup by beating Coahulla Creek 48-25 and Murray County 66-11 before topping Dalton 38-36 in the final. Tyler Bohannon was 3-0 with three pins to lead the Bruins, and Manny Barriero, Eli Johnson, Victor Pineda and Atticus Younas also were unbeaten.
