McCallie wins battle; Mountainee­rs cruise

McCallie junior Carter Hewitt continues to swing a red-hot bat.

The three-hole slugger showed opposite-field power Thursday, when he smacked a two-run homer over the rightfield fence in the fourth inning to help the Blue Tornado to a 3-1 home victory over Soddy-Daisy. Hewitt is batting .473 with three home runs among his 10 extrabase hits this spring, and his 17 RBIs have also helped spark his team’s 11-1 start.

McCallie’s Hudson Calhoun had an RBI single in the first inning and reached base safely in all three of his trips to the plate. Blue Tornado pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts, with Grayson Smith throwing four hitless innings and striking out seven batters to earn the victory and Austin Breedlove picking up a two-inning save.

Anthony Florio and Landon Maynor each had a hit and drew a pair of walks for the Trojans, who left 10 runners on base.

› Ooltewah 4, McCallie 3: The Owls scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth Wednesday to end a 10-game winning streak for the Blue Tornado. Ooltewah stole seven bases, and Noah Huling (2-for-3) and Fisher Perry (two RBIs) came through at the plate. Eli Smith pitched five strong innings, and Patrick Clarkson recorded a two-inning save.

› Heritage 15-15, Northwest Whitfield 8-2: In GHSA Region 7-AAAA play Wednesday in Tunnel Hill, the Generals (17-4, 10-1) passed the host Bruins (17-6, 7-4) for first place in the league standings with the doublehead­er sweep. Heritage scored three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh and took advantage of five Northwest errors and 10 walks in game one. C.J. Robertson and Brady Chandler each drove in three runs, with Cade Kiniry and Gage Shaver adding two RBIs for the winners. For the Bruins, Cade Fisher had two hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs, while Gavin Morgan was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Heritage rapped out 18 hits in game two, four coming from Alex Mixon, along with three RBIs and three runs scored, with Robertson adding three hits and two RBIs in support of Landon Skeen, who went all five innings and allowed four hits and no earned runs.

› Sonoravill­e 10, Adairsvill­e 1: Cole Godfrey was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Phoenix (13-8, 7-4 Region 6-AAA), and Hayden Holsomback drilled a two-run homer. Zach Lyles added two RBIs and got the pitching win with five innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts.

› Sonoravill­e 7, Rome 6: The Phoenix won the nonregion game against the Class AAAAAA Wolves on Brock Clements’ bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning. Clements also had two hits, including a homer, and drove in five runs, with Zach Lyles adding a solo homer and scoring three runs.

› Coahulla Creek 15, North Murray 3: The Colts (7-11, 6-3 Region 6-AAA) rolled to the home win in Varnell as Ryan Langford had two hits, one a triple, and drove in three runs. Trevor Headrick was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, and Irvin Hernandez added a pair of hits, two RBIs and three runs.

› LaFayette 4, Rockmart 3: The Ramblers (10-9, 4-5 Region 6-AAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win at home. Austin Tucker had a tying two-run double in the inning before Nick Adams drove in the go-ahead run with a single. Blake Mann was 2-for-3 and was the winning pitcher after allowing two earned runs and five hits in six innings. Skylar Cepeda earned the save with a spotless seventh.

› Meigs County 12, Sale Creek 2: Ethan Meadows went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored, while Logan Carroll had two hits and did not allow an earned run in five innings. The Tigers were also sparked by Will Meadows (two RBIs) and Luke Pendergras­s (two stolen bases, two runs). Sale Creek’s Jakob Elrod had two hits and an RBI.

SOFTBALL ›

Sequatchie County 13, Bledsoe County 1: Jesyca Dennis and Jadeyn Girdley both homered, and six Lady Indians had multiple hits in the game. Faith Kelly drove in four runs to back Cali Green, who struck out six batters in four innings.

TENNIS

› Chattanoog­a Christian School beat Collegedal­e Academy 9-0 in a boys’ match and 5-4 in a girls’ match. Henry Horne and Noah Walker were sharp in an 8-4 doubles victory, and Walker won his singles match 8-0. Jackson Murphy and Matthew Patrick won 9-8 as they defeated Patrick Lopez and Ryan Lopez in a 7-3 tiebreaker. In the girls’ match, Mary Alice Anz won 8-4 and teamed up with Jada Tun for an 8-3 doubles win. Camila Ramirez and Lauren Vanzyle were sharp in singles play and won their doubles match 9-7.
