Cleveland’s Hurst says he’ll play for Skyhawks
Almost a month to the day he scored 32 points to lead the Cleveland High School boys’ basketball team in a frustrating loss to Collierville in the TSSAA Class AAA state quarterfinals, Grant Hurst had something to celebrate.
Hurst, a senior, announced his college decision via Twitter on Saturday afternoon.
“I am proud to announce I have committed to further my academic and athletic career at UT-Martin!” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone who helped me to achieve my dreams on and off the court. This is only the beginning!”
A 6-foot-2 guard, Hurst helped the Blue Raiders to three Region 3-AAA championships and two state tournament appearances, and the program was 10619 during his years on the court. He averaged 19 points, six rebounds and five assists per game this past season, which ended with the 62-56 loss to Collierville.
The University of Tennessee at Martin finished 8-16 overall and 6-14 in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2020-21. Ryan Ridder was introduced as the 12th coach in Skyhawks history on April 7.
BASEBALL
› Farragut 7, Walker Valley 6: Aiden Gibson and Preston Hodges had two of the Mustangs’ seven hits, and Ryan Lay homered in a close defeat. Farragut scored six in the bottom of the fourth and escaped trouble in the seventh after allowing an RBI double to Hodges with no one out.
› McCallie 11, Brentwood Academy 1: Frankie Zahrobsky hit a grand slam in the first inning, and the Blue Tornado broke out for 13 hits. Nolan Sergeant tripled and scored two runs, Kyle Berry reached base three times and Hudson Calhoun and Grayson Smith each had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for McCallie. Smith struck out seven batters in three scoreless innings for the win.
› McCallie 10, Brentwood Academy 3: William Baker drove in four runs, and Frankie Zahrobsky had two doubles and went 3-for-3 for the Blue Tornado (15-2).
› Heritage 13, Signal Mountain 3: After Signal Mountain scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, Heritage pitcher JJ Hunt locked down as he only allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings while picking up the win for the Generals. CJ Robertson drove in three runs, and Caden Snyder doubled and drove in two runs, along with Brady Chandler. Dylan Bryant and Cade Kiniry each scored twice and drove in a run in the victory. Signal Mountain’s Braden Wolfard went 3-for-3 with a triple.
› Silverdale Baptist 4, Soddy-Daisy 1: Turner Junkins had three hits and did not allow an earned run in five innings for the Seahawks, who took the lead for good when Brett Rogers doubled in two runs in the fifth as part of his 2-for-3 performance. Noah Ferguson went 1-for-2 and scored for Soddy-Daisy.
› Maryville 10, Walker Valley 0: The Rebels scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings. Trevor Wyllie had two of the Mustangs’ three hits.
› Grace Academy 16, TCPS 2: Noah Bastian drove in five runs for the Golden Eagles, and Colton Grace and Wesley Thompson each had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Thompson was also the winning pitcher, posting six strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
SOFTBALL
› Sequatchie County 9, Cleveland 0: Addy Edgmon hit two home runs, and Ella Edgmon and Megan Hall added one apiece for Sequatchie County, which has hit 35 home runs this season in 25 games. Addy Edgmon leads the team with 12 homers and 57 RBIs. Ella Edgmon and Hall each went 3-for-4 with three RBIs against Cleveland, and Cali Green threw a four-hitter.
› GPS 17, Chattanooga Christian 3: The Bruisers scored 11 runs in the top of the fifth as Ansley Blevins (five RBIs) and Kennedy Moody hit back-to-back home runs. Also for GPS, Bella Jenkins homered, doubled and drove in four runs as she and McKamey Bratcher each had four hits, while Maddie Grace Hubbard (3-for-4, triple) and Chapel Cunningham (2-for-4, two RBIs) stood out as well. Chattanooga Christian’s Hannah Blevins went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI double.
› Hixson 16, Howard 0: Meghan Kernea doubled twice and scored three runs, with other Hixson standouts including Morgan Delashmitt (2-for-2, two RBIs, two runs), Jenna Griswold (three RBIs, two runs) and Ari Neal (three runs). Zoie Sullivan earned the pitching victory with eight strikeouts in three innings.
TENNIS
› McCallie 7, University School of Jackson 0: Gabe Getz and Will Leathers won 8-0 in doubles, and the undefeated Blue Tornado (7-0) also received flawless singles play from Andreas Sillaste and Colin Tuttle, who won both of their sets 6-0. Jeff Yu and the doubles tandem of Russell Fairman and Cole McNair allowed only one point each.
› GPS 7, Science Hill 0; GPS 6, USJ 1: Olivia Scotchie fought back after a 6-3 loss in the first set against Science Hill to win the next set 6-3 and then the tiebreaker. Chloe Nicola was also sharp, posting a pair of dominant singles victories and winning her two doubles matches with Erin Ensign.
