New Falcons LB is arrested

- WIRE REPORTS

ARLINGTON, Texas — NFL linebacker Barkevious Mingo, who is currently with the Atlanta Falcons, has been arrested in Texas on a charge of indecency with a child-sexual contact, police said Saturday. Mingo, 30, was arrested Thursday in the Dallas suburb of Arlington. Jail records listed an address for Mingo in West Monroe, Louisiana, where he starred in high school before going on to LSU. Arlington Police released a statement saying the agency could provide no further information about the investigation, citing “the nature of the charges and age of the victim,” but said “Mingo turned himself in on his own accord in consultation with his attorney.” Mingo was released after posting a $25,000 bond. His attorney did not immediately return an email from The Associated Press seeking comment Saturday. Mingo, chosen by the Cleveland Browns as the sixth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft after skipping his senior season, signed a one-year contract in March with the Falcons. Mingo also has played for the Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks during his NFL career. He played for the Patriots when they came back to beat the Falcons in overtime to win Super Bowl LI. The Falcons released a statement that said they became aware of the allegations against Barkley on Saturday and were “gathering information on this incident. The Falcons take the allegations very seriously and will continue to monitor the situation.”

› HAMPTON, Ga. — Kyle Busch’s Xfinity Series sweep wasn’t as sweet as he hoped. The veteran NASCAR driver and Cup Series regular completed a 5-for5 sweep of what he said will be his final season on the second-tier circuit with a late recovery Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Busch knocked Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Daniel Hemric from the lead with a late push, which cast a pall on what otherwise would have been an ideal way for Busch to say goodbye to the circuit he has continued to race on long after winning the 2009 season title. “It’s not quite the win we were hoping for,” said Busch, who has twice won the top-tier Cup Series season championship (2015, 2019). “A little bit of a somber win I guess, not just for it being the last one but for the way it kind of happened.” Busch finished 0.550 second ahead of Jeb Burton for his 102nd Xfinity victory and 222nd overall in NASCAR’s three national series, extending records in both cases. Busch took the lead after pushing Hemric on a restart with six laps remaining, apparently in an effort to help. “I just wanted to hit him forward and straight but turned him sideways a little bit,” said Busch, who said he planned for this to be his final Xfinity race but left room to change his mind by saying “You never say never” and that this Xfinity race was “the last scheduled one.”

GOLF

› SILVIS, Ill. — Sebastian Muñoz tried to imagine what Saturday at the John Deere Classic would have felt like without electronic scoreboards around the golf course. It might have created a lot less stress. In rain-softened conditions at TPC Deere Run, everyone knew making birdies was the only way to stay in the game. Once the rain cleared and Munoz no longer had to deal with keeping his clubs dry and his umbrella open, the 28-year-old from Colombia ran off three birdies that gave him a 4-under-par 67 and a one-shot lead at 16-under 197 going into the final round. “It’s huge,” Muñoz said. “Every shot counts, and having every extra one for tomorrow might help me out a lot.” Even so, there’s reason to feel as though the 50th edition of this tournament is just getting started with 10 players separated by three shots. Brandon Hagy also had a 67 and was one shot behind, alone in second but with a crowd just behind him in third. Baylor School graduate Luke List was among those within three shots of the lead despite his struggles. List began the weekend with a one-shot lead but didn’t make a birdie until the 10th hole Saturday, and when the former Vanderbilt player missed a six-foot birdie attempt on the final hole, he had to settle for a 71 that had him tied for eighth at 13 under. Even so, the 36-year-old with two Korn Ferry Tour career victories still has a chance at his first PGA Tour title. Of the 20 golfers within five shots of the lead, seven have never won on the top circuit.
