U.S.-led ground operation in Afghan campaign, but many Taliban and alQaida fighters slip through dragnet and seek refuge in Pakistan.

May 8 — Alleged dirty bomber Jose Padilla arrested after flying into Chicago’s O’Hare airport from Pakistan.

May 16 — White House acknowledg­es that Bush was briefed by CIA on Aug. 6, 2001, about alQaida hijacking threat.
