Known lynchings in Hamilton County

There have been six known lynchings in Hamilton County. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, lynching was the most public form of terror and violence, largely leveled against Black people. The attacks, motivated by white supremacy, exploited communitie­s of color and led to millions of Blacks fleeing the American South, where lynching was most prevalent. These are the known victims of lynching in Hamilton County: Elridge Merrill, 1873 Charles Williams, 1885 Thomas Gailiff, 1889 Alfred Blount, 1893 Charles Brown, 1897 Ed Johnson, 1906
