UTC women lose on road

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s basketball team lost 85-58 to Tennessee Tech on Saturday night in Cookeville.

Tennessee Tech improved to 2-0, while UTC fell to 0-2. The Mocs dropped their opener this past Tuesday to Belmont, 88-70 in Chattanoog­a.

Against the Golden Eagles, Dena Jarrells led UTC with 13 points and three steals, Karsen Murphy added 10 points, Abbey Cornelius totaled nine points and as many rebounds, and Sigrun Olafsdotti­r had a team-best five assists.

Tennessee Tech, which led 23-10 after the first quarter, 41-28 at halftime and 62-43 entering the final period, had five scorers in double figures, led by Anna Jones with 17 points. She also had nine rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Mocs return to competitio­n Wednesday at Tennessee State, with tipoff in Nashville set for 6:30 p.m. Eastern. The Lady Tigers are 2-0 — with wins against NAIA program Fisk, 94-48, and Georgia State, 70-67 — going into Sunday’s game at Kansas.

UTC’s next home game is against Murray State at 7 p.m. Friday.
