Baylor’s Godbout wins Mr. Baseball

For the second year in a row a Baylor School baseball player has taken the state’s top individual honor.

Senior shortstop Henry Godbout was named the TSSAA Division II-AA Mr. Baseball award winner in Murfreesbo­ro on Tuesday. Tampa Bay Rays prospect Cooper Kinney won the honor last season for co-coaches Greg Elie and Mike Kinney’s program.

The Red Raiderslea­doff hitter and University of Virginia signee entered the Spring Fling batting .510 with 14 doubles, nine home runs and 35 runs scored and batted in through 29 games. Godbout has eight three-hit games for a Baylor seeking its fourth consecutiv­e state championsh­ip.

Godbout’s on-base percentage, buoyed by 16 walks (comparted to eight strikeouts), is .586. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder also has a .942 fielding percentage.

“Henry Godbout has been a tireless worker in his time at Baylor and he is reaping the fruits of his labor,” Elie and Kinney said in a statement following the announceme­nt of the award. “His dedication to his craft is remarkable and he is a true student of the game. He has performed against all levels of competitio­n, but particular­ly well when the lights are the brightest.”

Silverdale Baptist senior Turner Junkins and Sale Creek senior Jakob Elrod were also finalists for Mr. Baseball in Division II-A and Class A, respective­ly.

Junkins is 10-1 with a 1.14 ERA and 80 strikeouts over 55 1/3 innings, while also knocking in 38 runs with 19 extra base hits for the Seahawks.

Elrod had 76 strikeouts over 45 2/3 innings with a 2.01 ERA while also leading the Panthers with five home runs with a .452 average and 33 RBIs.
