One man is recovering from at least six knife wounds to his back and another is being held on a $1 million bond stemming from an altercation early Saturday at a small bar in downtown Dayton, Tennessee.

James Akira Orcutt, 30, of Dayton, was charged with aggravated assault after Dayton police reviewed video from Kenny’s Bar & Grill at the corner of Railroad Street and Second Avenue allegedly showing Orcutt stab Isaiah Gillespie in the back with a large knife, according to an affidavit filed in General Sessions Court by Dayton Officer Michael Dailey Green.

When police arrived at the bar, Gillespie was found lying face down on a bench on an outside deck bleeding from numerous stab wounds, Green’s affidavit states. It was about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Once Gillespie was taken away by an ambulance, police reviewed surveillance video from the bar that showed an altercation underway and a man leaving the camera frame and then returning with a large knife, according to the affidavit. The video shows the man first go inside the building for a few seconds and then come back outside.

“The video shows Isaiah being slung down to the ground onto his hands and knees. It was at this time the male party stabs Isaiah approximately six times in the back,” Green’s affidavit states. “Police officers that have had prior dealings with the male party and witnesses on the scene identified the assailant as James Orcutt. The video then shows James leave the view of the camera with his girlfriend.”

A warrant was issued for Orcutt’s arrest for the aggravated assault charge, according to the affidavit.

Jail officials said by phone Tuesday that Orcutt’s bond was set Monday during a hearing in General Sessions Court. Jail officials said Orcutt faces a court date on March 28.

Officials who answered the phone Tuesday at the Dayton Police Department were unable to give Gillespie’s most recent condition.
