John Timothy Mitch Sr.

John Timothy “Tim” Mitch, of Chattanoog­a, TN, passed away on March 11, 2023, at the age of 76. He was born on December 17, 1946, the son of William E. and Mary A. Mitch. Tim grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1965. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from The University of the South, Sewanee, in 1969, and completed the Management Developmen­t Program at Harvard University in 1984.

While a student at Sewanee, Tim was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and played on the football team. Immediatel­y following graduation, he served in the U. S. Army from 1969 to 1972, completing his service in Fort Meade, Maryland. It was at this time that he met his beloved wife of 50 years, Muffy Mitch, of Baltimore, Maryland.

He commenced his profession­al career in the constructi­on industry in 1972, spending most of this time in Jackson, Mississipp­i. Over the course of his forty-year career, he rose through the ranks from superinten­dent to project management to the executive level but loved nothing more than mentoring young profession­als entering the industry, as well as fostering relationsh­ips with field personnel.

Tim spent years running the roads and levees of Jackson, Mississipp­i, competing in several marathons. He cared deeply for Muffy and was especially proud of his four grandchild­ren. He was loyal to family and loved friends from Birmingham to Jackson. He especially loved his college friends, forever known to his family as the “Sewanee Boys.”

Tim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Muffy; his son, John Timothy Mitch Jr. of Chattanoog­a; Katherine Mitch Stanley ( Clayton) of Corinth, Mississipp­i; four grandchild­ren, Timmy and Joe Mitch; John and Annie Stanley; his brother, Dr. William E Mitch (Lexie) of Houston, Texas; and his sister, Mary Ann Carey of Spruce Head, Maine.

Mr. Mitch’s family offers their deep gratitude to the nurses, caregivers, and staff of Life Care Center of East Ridge and Hearth Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanoog­a, Tennessee, on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at 11 A.M. EST, with a reception to follow in Key Andrews Hall.

A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at 11 A.M. CST.
