Mary Chitty

Mary Alice Davis Chitty, 87, of Chattanooga, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, with her only daughter and son-inlaw by her side.

Mary was born August 6, 1936 in Georgetown, Tennessee to the late Mary Katherine and Ben Davis.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years Rex Chitty and by five siblings.

She is survived by her daughter Angela Beard (Joel), two grandsons Sam Beard and Chase Beard (Kaki) and great granddaughter Ann Margaret Beard.

Over the years, Mary worked at several area hospitals answering the switchboard, purchasing supplies, medical transcribing and admitting outpatients.

However, her favorite job was Grandmother. She looked forward to every sporting event, play, Grandparent’s Day and birthday of her grandsons Chase and Sam, who brought light and laughter to her life.

Mary was always a caregiver at heart—caring for her husband, both parents and eldest sister. There was always a seat at Mary’s table, a meal to be shared and a listening ear.

A prayerful woman who loved the Lord, Mary enjoyed church—singing in the choir and working with children by teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and keeping the nursery. She loved babies and she was overjoyed to meet her new great granddaughter just days ago.

Heartfelt gratitude to special niece Glenda Lieker (Ted), nurses Natalie and Maggie and caregivers Dee, Patricia, Linda and other kind individuals who grew to love Mary, becoming part of her caregiving family. They would tell you Mary tried to feed and care for each of them.

She will be remembered at a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37404.
