Weather alters Atlanta’s plans
CHICAGO — Surely summer will be better, at least for the weather if not the schedule.
The finale to a three-game series between the Atlanta Braves and the host Chicago White Sox that was set for Wednesday afternoon wound up being postponed because of a forecast of persistent rain and snow.
The interleague matchup was rescheduled for June 27, when the Braves had been set for an off day in between a road trip that ended with a night game against the St. Louis Cardinals and the start of a homestand the following night against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Truist Park. The makeup game will occur when Chicago had an off day in the middle of a homestand that starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers and ends against the Colorado Rockies.
Atlanta’s Spencer Strider had been scheduled to face fellow right-hander Dominic Leone, a reliever, as the White Sox planned to go with a bullpen game for the finale to their opening homestand.
It was the second postponement already this season for the Braves (3-2), whose opener against the host Philadelphia Phillies last week was pushed back a day to Friday. Atlanta, the six-time reigning National League East champion, won its first two against division rival Philadelphia in dominant fashion before falling by a run Sunday.
The Braves then won 9-0 on Monday in Chicago — that game was called after eight innings due to weather — and lost 3-2 on Tuesday as the White Sox got their first win of the year in their fifth try.
Atlanta is off Thursday before playing its home opener Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Strider (0-0, 3.60), who started on opening day, is now scheduled to get the ball for the home opener, too. Friday’s scheduled starter for the Diamondbacks is lefthander Tommy Henry (0-1, 11.25).
