We should never cease proclaiming God’s truths
Q: There’s a weekly ecumenical Bible study that happens at my place of employment during the lunch hour, with space provided by the large secular corporation where I work. The group has grown with curiosity seekers. I’ve been asked to lead this group, but I’m no Bible scholar. Some of my co-workers warn me not to come off as a “know-it-all” because I stand on the fact that Jesus is the only way to Heaven. I’ve rehearsed this in my mind and asked some close friends to critique me. They agree the absoluteness that others sense is the power of God convicting them. Should I stand down and let another who believes in many other religions take over for the sake of unity? If not, for the sake of truth, how can I be assured that I am not stepping out of bounds? — T.T.
A: The very power of our conviction sometimes inclines us toward feeling that we are right and that other people are wrong, based on our own ideas rather than Scripture. Sometimes people have the human tendency to zero in on trivial matters, insisting that they and they alone have the right answer. The late Dr. Harry Ironside once said, “Beware lest we mistake our prejudices for our convictions.”
But we should never
cease proclaiming God’s truths as the Bible records them. As Christians, we should pray that God will give us a gracious spirit as we share the greatest news ever announced to the world. Exhibiting grace is one of the most important of Christian virtues. The teachings of Jesus deal frequently with our attitudes toward others. Study them and live by them. Only then can we demonstrate to a confused world the transforming power of Christ in us.
Stick to the Bible and its principles and teachings, and let God’s Word speak for itself — it has an impact of its own.
