Mil­i­tary vets in­vited to ap­ply for 1-day trip to see DC memo­ri­als

AN­NIS­TON — A small group of peo­ple in Cal­houn County has formed a com­mit­tee with the goal of tak­ing up to 99 Veter­ans on a one-day trip to Wash­ing­ton, D.C., in May to see their World War II, the Korean War, and the Viet­nam War Memo­ri­als and other sites.

Com­mit­tee Chair­man and re­tired Sol­dier David Hall said, “Our ‘Honor Flight’ mis­sion is to pay trib­ute to and thank the veter­ans of nine North­east Alabama Coun­ties who served in World War II, the Korean War, or the Viet­nam War by pro­vid­ing them a safe and mem­o­rable all-ex­pense paid trip to Wash­ing­ton, D.C., to visit the War Memo­ri­als ded­i­cated to honor their ser­vice and sac­ri­fice.”

Veter­ans from the fol­low­ing nine Alabama Coun­ties are in­vited to ap­ply: Cal­houn, Chero­kee, Clay, Cle­burne, DeKalb, Etowah, Ran­dolph, St. Clair, and Tal­ladega.

Hall said, “We are plan­ning to take up to 99 Veter­ans. An­other 50 peo­ple are be­ing re­cruited to serve as nurses or emer­gency med­i­cal tech­ni­cians, guardians, and safety per­son­nel on our Honor Flight.”

Each Vet­eran who wants to make the trip is asked to com­plete an ap­pli­ca­tion form. The form is avail­able upon re­quest. The ap­plica- tion is also avail­able via the Cal­houn County Honor Flight web­site: http://cal­houn­coun­ty­honor­flight.com/

The Honor Flight Com­mit­tee is ac­cept­ing do­na­tions from the gen­eral pub­lic and from busi­nesses and or­ga­ni­za­tions. Hall said all do­na­tions, large and small, are ap­pre­ci­ated. He also said a $ 911 spon­sor­ship will cover the cost of a Vet­eran and a guardian.

World War II and ter­mi­nally ill Veter­ans will be given pri­or­ity dur­ing the se­lec­tion process. Sec­ond pri­or­ity will be for Veter­ans of the Korean War. Third pri­or­ity will be for Veter­ans of the Viet­nam War.

Se­lected Veter­ans will not be charged to par­tic­i­pate in the May Honor Flight.

Peo­ple se­lected to go on the trip in a sup­port­ing role will be asked to pay $350 to cover their trip ex­penses.

“We rely 100 per­cent on do­na­tions from fund rais­ing events and cash do­na­tions from in­di­vid­u­als and com­pa­nies. We are non­profit and those who do­nate money are gra­ciously given re­ceipts for their records,” Hall said.
