Military vets invited to apply for 1-day trip to see DC memorials
ANNISTON — A small group of people in Calhoun County has formed a committee with the goal of taking up to 99 Veterans on a one-day trip to Washington, D.C., in May to see their World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War Memorials and other sites.
Committee Chairman and retired Soldier David Hall said, “Our ‘Honor Flight’ mission is to pay tribute to and thank the veterans of nine Northeast Alabama Counties who served in World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War by providing them a safe and memorable all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the War Memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice.”
Veterans from the following nine Alabama Counties are invited to apply: Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, Randolph, St. Clair, and Talladega.
Hall said, “We are planning to take up to 99 Veterans. Another 50 people are being recruited to serve as nurses or emergency medical technicians, guardians, and safety personnel on our Honor Flight.”
Each Veteran who wants to make the trip is asked to complete an application form. The form is available upon request. The applica- tion is also available via the Calhoun County Honor Flight website: http://calhouncountyhonorflight.com/
The Honor Flight Committee is accepting donations from the general public and from businesses and organizations. Hall said all donations, large and small, are appreciated. He also said a $ 911 sponsorship will cover the cost of a Veteran and a guardian.
Applications completed by Veterans and guardians need to be mailed to the Honor Flight Committee at: Calhoun County Honor Flight c/o DAV Chapter 98 P.O. Box 2208 Anniston, AL 36202
World War II and terminally ill Veterans will be given priority during the selection process. Second priority will be for Veterans of the Korean War. Third priority will be for Veterans of the Vietnam War.
Selected Veterans will not be charged to participate in the May Honor Flight.
People selected to go on the trip in a supporting role will be asked to pay $350 to cover their trip expenses.
“We rely 100 percent on donations from fund raising events and cash donations from individuals and companies. We are nonprofit and those who donate money are graciously given receipts for their records,” Hall said.
