Re­ten­tion -a. Stu­dents take a full year of a class in one se­mes­ter.

-b. Many months may pass be­fore they take the next course in the se­quence or be­fore they take im­por­tant tests like the ACT, re­sult­ing in more time to for­get what was learned. Time lost - a. Less to­tal time is spent on core classes in typ­i­cal block pro­grams sim­ply be­cause one 90-minute class has 10 per­cent less time than two 50-minute classes.

-b. Spend­ing less time on math, English and other core cour­ses con­trib­utes to the wa­ter­ing down of con­tent.
