Campaign raises awareness for The Children’s Advocacy Center

Cherokee County Herald - - NEWS -

The Children’s Advocacy Center is in the process of preparing for their 13th annual Casual Friday for Kids Campaign this year. Lori Harris, Executive Director said that she and the CAC board are so grateful to each individual and business that purchased t-shirts and will wear them each Friday throughout the month of April. “We could not continue to exist and provide services to children and families here in Cherokee County without strong community support. We can never say thank you enough for the generosity of the people in this great county and helping us continue to provide free services to child abuse victims and their families.”

The Casual Friday for Kids campaign not only helps the CAC raise funds for their services, but is perhaps the greatest public awareness tool that the CAC does each year. It is their hope that each Friday during the month of April, the county will be painted blue. We hope it will be next to impossible to conduct business in the county without seeing concerned citizens wearing their CAC T-shirt. “We are also thankful to the area businesses that allow their employees to purchase shirts and wear them on a different day of the week if their business is closed on Friday and to the businesses that have a dress or safety code that prevents them from wearing the shirts during working hours, but allow their employees to purchase. As a non-profit, we value every dollar we make from this campaign as well as the public awareness that it brings to our agency.”

The t-shirt proudly displays the blue ribbon, a nationally recognized symbol for child abuse awareness. The color blue is used because of the Virginia grandmother that tied the blue ribbon to her van antenna. She said that she never intended to forget the bruised, battered bodies of her grandchildren that she lost at the hands of their abusive father. This year’s t-shirt has a slogan on the back of the shirt highlighting this year’s theme “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better: it’s not.” It truly takes a concerned community to help children and their families overcome the trauma of child abuse. It is our hope that our community will continue to be heroes in recognizing the warning signs of abuse and reporting any suspected or confirmed child abuse.
