“She’s inexperienced on the varsity level, but she’s very athletic and hopefully will bring us some power once we work with her this month,” Bates said of Chesnut.
Like Chesnut, sophomore Victoria Collum might play more than one role for the Lady Wildcats.
“She’s a solid player,” Bates said. “This year is going to be about getting her experience to really make a difference for next year. I may throw her in to set. I may throw her in to hit. I may throw her in the middle. She’s just got to be versatile for me this year.”
Rounding out the Lady Wildcat roster is Cedar Bluff transfer Colbi Whitlock. Bates said Whitlock will fill the roles Audrey Richardson had last year.
“She’s (Whitlock) come in and fit well with us,” Bates said. “She’s playing some right side and outside.”
Sand Rock competes in Class 2A, Area 12 with Collinsville and Gaston. The Lady Wildcats open the 2017 season Sept. 2 in a tournament at Lincoln.
“Right now, we don’t have anything that is going to make you say ‘wow’ when you watch us, but we’re scrappy and we’re solid,” Bates said. “We’re going to get the ball back to the other team, but we want to bring it back with more power. We’re going to be working on that this month.”
