THE COST OF SWAP
When installing a crate engine like this, most enthusiasts just look at the cost of the new engine and think, “I’ll just add $100 to the engine and that will cover everything else.” That might have been true back when Nixon was president, but not now.
Just the price of the break-in oil plus the first oil change and two PH30 filters is close to $75. Add spark plugs, plug wires, new hoses, clamps, and two gallons of antifreeze and we’re approaching $250. We priced the complete parts list through Summit Racing and not to scare you but it totaled north of $2,400. Of course, there are lots of parts here that you probably won’t need, but it’s not far off if you are starting from scratch.
This is the reality of engine swapping today, but if you plan ahead this allows you to line up as many of the parts you will need ahead of time so you’re not rushing off to the auto parts store or waiting for the UPS guy to arrive. It’s a lot less stressful.
