1970 (14): Buf­falo Sabres, Van­cou­ver Canucks.

1972 (16): New York Is­lan­ders, At­lanta Flames (move to Cal­gary in 1980). 1974 (18): Wash­ing­ton Cap­i­tals, Kansas City Scouts (be­come Colorado Rock­ies in 1976, be­come New Jersey Devils in 1982).

1978 (17): Cleve­land Barons merge with North Stars.

1979 (21): Edmonton Oil­ers, Hartford Whalers (be­come Carolina Hur­ri­canes in 1997), Que­bec Nordiques (be­come Colorado Avalanche in 1995), Win­nipeg Jets (be­come Ari­zona Coy­otes in 1996).
