Ramblers hold off Redbirds

Marques Townes scored 21 points and Loyola held off Illinois State 67-64 on Saturday at Gentile Arena, despite going the final six minutes without a field goal.

The Ramblers (10-7, 3-1 Missouri Valley) made up for the 0-for-6 drought by going 6-for-6 from the line in the last two minutes.

Matt Chastain’s dunk tied the game at 61 with 3:37 remaining, but the Redbirds (9-8, 2-2) went scoreless until Zach Copeland’s three drew them within 65-64 with 15 seconds left. Clayton Custer made two free throws and a few seconds later grabbed a rebound when Copeland missed a three to seal the victory.

UIC 73, Cleveland State 56

Tarkus Ferguson scored 18 points with six three-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists as the Flames (99, 3-2 Horizon League) bounced the Vikings (5-14, 0-6) at Credit Union 1 Arena. UIC tied a school record with 17 threes in 38 attempts. At 44.7 percent, they shot better from behind the arc than from in front of it.

Iowa 72, Ohio State 62

Luka Garza scored 16 points and Tyler Cook tallied 15 with eight rebounds as the host Hawkeyes (14-3, 3-3 Big Ten) dealt the No. 16 Buckeyes (12-4, 2-3) their third consecutiv­e loss.

Minnesota 88, Rutgers 70

Amir Coffey had 29 points, Jordan Murphy 15 points and 14 rebounds and Dupree McBrayer 15 points and 10 assists as the host Gophers (13-3, 3-2 Big Ten) ripped the Scarlet Knights (8-7, 1-4).

California Baptist 77, Chicago State 75

Ty Rowell drained a wide-open three in the final seconds, and the Lancers (10-7, 1-2 WAC) edged the Cougars (3-14, 0-2), earning the school’s first Division-I road win.

Duke 80, Florida State 78

Cam Reddish hit a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to lift No. 1 Duke (14-1, 3-0 ACC) over host No. 13 Florida State (13-3, 1-2).
