79, of Strasburg, Illinois, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed away at 11:30 p.m., Monday, January 14, 2019, in his residence.

A graveside service will be held this spring in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Strasburg, IL. Arrangemen­ts are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg, IL. Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Strasburg, IL or the Strasburg Veterans Memorial.

John was born on December 5, 1939 in Chicago, IL, the son of John James and Bernice Estelle (Jasulaitis) Granat and was raised in the Catholic faith. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School, the Class of 1957, and then served in the U.S. Army. John worked as a meat inspector for the USDA for over 30 years. He loved hunting and his hunting dogs. John married Vivian Ann Wittenberg on March 29, 1971.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian of Strasburg, IL; daughter, Debra Granat of Plainfield, IL; brothers, Joseph Granat (Dolores) of Oak Lawn, IL, Steven Granat (Sharon) of Frankfort, IL, and Larry Granat (Esperanza) of Chicago, IL; sisters, Josephine Granat of LaGrange, IL and Patricia Venegas (Sam) of Maine; sisters-in-law, Carol Granat of Plainfield, IL and Mary Granat of Chicago, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, Jerome and Richard Granat; sisters, Johanna, Barbara, and Mary Granat; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Lillian Wittenberg.
