If the song Linda Ronstadt recorded here doesn’t take you back to the 1970s, the wood paneling will.

This room has a story to tell. And if these retro, wood-paneled walls could talk, they’d tell you about a 24-year old woman from Tucson, Arizona named Linda Ronstadt who sang her heart out in this room. Early in her career in 1970, before becoming one of the topselling artists of the 70s and 80s, Ronstadt recorded her first Top 20 hit “Long Long Time” here, and these walls can fondly recall her clear, wistful voice, full of longing about an unrequited love and a hurt that would never subside.

You may be familiar with this heartbreaking country-pop ballad, but what might surprise you is that Linda’s vocals were recorded in a bathroom; the one at Cinderella Sound studio in Nashville, owned by the legendary session guitarist and producer Wayne Moss. Used by Linda Ronstadt and countless other artists as a recording booth, this charming bathroom offered seclusion while its wood paneling and fabric ceilings gave a warm intimate tone to a singer’s voice. Recording in this bathroom also served the practical purpose of separating the vocals from other instruments during live recording sessions so they wouldn’t bleed into each other.

Tucked away in a garage in a semi-rural area on the outskirts of Nashville, Cinderella Sound is still going strong today, 58 years after its founding by Moss. While studio manager and chief audio engineer Robert Lucas is wellacquainted with the latest hightech editing software, the music at Cinderella is mixed on a vintage 1960s-era recording console that literally hums with nostalgia. Its coveted Russian tube pre-amps are renowned for giving music a warm, analog quality, something that truly stands out and sounds beautiful in today’s cold, modern and digitally manipulated world.

After recording here, Linda Ronstadt would go on to sell over 100 million records and help open doors for generations of female artists. If you visit the studio, step inside the bathroom and listen for the faintest echo of Linda’s pure, crystalline voice, still ringing from the 1970s, still lamenting that long lost love after all of these years. Because here at Cinderella Sound in Nashville, these walls don’t just talk, they sing.
