Report: McCann to Mets

-

MLB. com, citing sources it didn’t identify, reported Saturday that the Mets agreed to terms with former White Sox catcher James McCann on a four- year contract worth slightly more than $ 40 million, pending the results of a physical.

Signing McCann does two things for the Mets: It gives them a strong all- around catcher and keeps their payroll low enough to stay aggressive on other free- agent targets, such as outfielder George Springer and right- hander Trevor Bauer. Catcher J. T. Realmuto, the top free- agent catcher, is expected to command a much more lucrative package.

McCann, 30, enjoyed a career season with the Sox in 2019. He had 18 home runs, 60 RBI and a .789 OPS — all career highs — and made the American League All- Star team.

He split time with Yasmani Grandal behind the plate in the shortened 2020 season and finished with seven homers, 15 RBI and a careerhigh .896 OPS in 31 games.

More Mets

Multiple outlets reported Diamondbacks assistant general manager Jared Porter is close to becoming the GM of the Mets. The sides reportedly are working out final details on a four- year contract.

Porter was the Cubs’ director of professional scouting in 2015- 16 before joining the Diamondbacks and was considered to be a strong candidate for the Cubs’ GM vacancy created when Jed Hoyer was promoted to replace Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations.

Nats looking at Schwarber

The Washington Post reported the Nationals have some interest in outfielder Kyle Schwarber, 27, who became a free agent when the Cubs non- tendered him this month. He had a paltry .308 on- base percentage and .393 slugging percentage in the shortened 2020 season.
