Mom says ex-Irish Nix dead at 29

A TV station in Jacksonvil­le, Florida, reported the mother of former Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix confirmed Saturday that he had been found dead after being reported missing Wednesday. Nix was 29.

No details about the nature of Nix’s death were immediatel­y available, but a car that matches the descriptio­n of his was pulled from a pond near the location where Nix had been shot in December, the station reported.

Nix played at Notre Dame in 2011-13 and was picked by the Texans in the third round of the 2014 draft. His only NFL playing time came in four games with the Giants in 2015.

GOLF Morikawa leads WGC event

Collin Morikawa shot a 5-under-par 67 that featured a stretch of seven birdies in eight holes to open a two-stroke lead after the third round of the World Golf Championsh­ips-Workday Championsh­ip in Bradenton, Florida.

Morikawa, the reigning PGA champion, completed 54 holes at 15-under 201 to put himself atop a crowded leaderboar­d. Billy Horschel and Brooks Koepka were two shots back, and seven other players — including Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed — were within five strokes of the lead.

♦ Annika Sorenstam, playing in an LPGA Tour event for the first time in more than 12 years after retiring, shot a 7-over 79 and sank to the bottom of the field after the third round of the tournament in Orlando, Florida.

The 50-year-old Sorenstam, who is making a one-time appearance because the tournament is being played on her home course, finished 54 holes at 9-over 225.

NHL Sore wrist sidelines Leafs’ Matthews

Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews missed the team’s road game against the Oilers because of a sore wrist. He has 31 points (18 goals, 13 assists) in 20 games this season despite dealing with the wrist injury much of the way.

♦ Sabres coach Ralph Krueger said starting goalie Linus Ullmark will miss at least the next month with an unspecifie­d lower-body injury suffered in the first period Thursday against the Devils.
