OT win gives Loyola MVC title

-

Cameron Krutwig led four players in double figures with 20 points, and No. 21 Loyola wrapped up the regular-season title in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 65-58 overtime victory Saturday against Southern Illinois at Gentile Arena. The Ramblers will be the No. 1 seed in the MVC tournament, which begins Thursday in St. Louis.

Loyola (21-4, 16-2 MVC) entered the day tied for the conference lead with Drake, but its victory and the Bulldogs’ loss to Bradley enabled them to clinch the MVC title outright. The Ramblers outscored the Salukis 9-2 in overtime to extend their home winning streak to 22 games.

‘‘It’s obviously better to win it outright, but we didn’t care about [Drake],’’ Krutwig said. ‘‘There was more celebration when we beat Southern than Drake losing.’’

Lucas Williamson added 13 points, Braden Norris 12 and Marquise Kennedy 10 for Loyola, which won despite shooting only 3-for-18 from three-point range.

Lance Jones scored 30 points for SIU (11-13, 5-13), which shot 51% from the field but was done in by 20 turnovers.

Kansas 71, Baylor 58
