Reinhard Barthel died on March 12, 2021 after a battle with cancer. He was 83. Reinhard was born in Breslau, Germany. After WWII, he apprentice­d at several famous hotels in Europe, worked on the New Amsterdam Cruise ship, and then managed the US Air Force Offers Club in Ankara, Turkey. He graduated from the Ecole Hotelier Restaurant and Hotel school in Lausanne, Switzerlan­d, spent a year at the Beau-Rivage Palace hotel in Lausanne, and then immigrated to the United States in 1965 to manage the food and beverage program at the Glenview Country Club. He became managing partner of the Tower Garden Restaurant in Skokie In 1974, and sole owner in the early ‘80s. He sold the Tower Garden in 1989, became a United States citizen, and then purchased Café 36 in 1993. He was especially proud of his family and had wonderful friends. He had an amazing life.

Reinhard Barthel is survived by his wife Nancy; his son Reinhard Barthel Jr. (Jina Pendry); daughter Simone (Szczepan) Szulc-Cieplicki; grandchild­ren, Nicole (Jeff) Miller and Marc Szulc-Cieplicki; and Reinhard’s brother Gerd (Gabi) Barthel and nephews Roland Barthel and Rainer Barthel in Germany. He is preceded in death by his father, Fritz Barthel and mother, Margarete Adamczewsk­iWeis.
